10/11/12 – Norwich Dragons Match Reports

Mens East League Division 2 North
Spalding 1s 4:3 Norwich Dragons 1s

For the second week running Dragons started the game quickly, playing fast flowing hockey, putting the home side under massive pressure. However, they were not able to turn their dominance into goals, with the Spalding goalkeeper saving everything that was goal bound. Very much against the run of play Spalding broke quickly down the middle of the pitch and, with Dragons keeper Whiting unable to complete a diving clearance outside the circle, the Spalding forward was left to slot home into an empty net. For Dragons, Rupert Snelling was unlucky to score from two well placed corners, the Spalding defence make good saves on the line. Though Dragons continued to enjoy good possession Spalding came more into the game and were able to work the ball to a well placed forward to deflect into the Dragons net, making it 2-0 to the home side. Dragons kept calm and kept pushing forward looking for goals. Alex Browne opened the scoring for the visitors, smashing home from a well worked penalty corner move (2-1 Spalding). Alex Browne then completed his brace, calmly slotting the ball through the legs of the advancing Spalding goalkeeper, rounding off a good Dragons break. Half time score 2-2.

The second half carried on much as the first half ended, but became increasingly fractious as both teams tried to find the winning goals to guarantee the points which are so precious in such a tight league. Dragons created a number of good chances in open play and from corners, but could not find away pass the inform Spalding keeper. Dragons then had a man sin binned, the culmination of a number of stick tackles. They then had another player sin binned for playing the ball above his shoulder. Despite being down to 9 the Dragons defence was not breached and they caused a couple of scares at the Spalding end. However, it was Spalding who scored next, the ball being hit into the circle and being judged by the umpire to have been touched by the Dragons keeper as it went passed him, ending up in the goal (3-2 Spalding). Back to full strength Dragons pushed forward looking for the equaliser. Rupert Snelling made in 3-3 from a penalty corner, his Dragon flick nestling into the side netting in the goal. As time ran out the game looked to be heading for a draw, but Spalding won a series of consecutive penalty corners, during which Dragons received another yellow card, eventually scoring from a worked move with nearly the final hit of the game.

Final score was 4-3 to Spalding.

Dragons man of the match was Alex Browne.

Norwich Dragons 2s 1:0 Dereham 4s

Dragons made hard work of what should have been an easy win. A spirited physical Dereham side made the whole 70 minutes of the match hard work for the Dragons team.

Dragons were not playing well , but late in the first half Dragons only real hockey move of the match resulted in Mark Flatman scoring with a well placed shot.

The second half continued in the same vane as the first, a mis-jointed Dragons coming up against a determined Dereham and only a fine save at the death from goal keeper and man of the match Damien Ives secured a Dragons win.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 6 North East
Norwich Dragons 4s 4:1 Bury St Edmunds 5s

Scorers:- Mike Banham, Ollie King, Paul Keating and Ben Harvey

Dragons have been undefeated at the Den so far this season and ran out on Saturday looking to keep that record.

The opposition, Bury St. Edmunds 5ths, were currently second in the League so Dragons were certainly prepared for a tough match.

The early minutes of the game belonged to Dragons, keeping the ball well and making some good passes, little pressure was put on the oppositions goal however which led to Bury taking control of the game more. Dragons absorbed the pressure, defending superbly and keeping up the good work of man-marking. Chris Millar was also in good form preventing Bury from taking the lead on several occasions. Dragons however began to regroup again and turned their defending into attack, which led to a short corner, converted by the reliable Mike Banham.

The game settled into 50:50 possession, with both sides making the game flowing and exciting, with chances at both ends, Ben Campbell came very close with an excellent shot from the top of the ‘D’. The work rate from Dragons however ensured they went into the break with a slender 1:0 advantage.

The second half saw Dragons take control of the game, in particular through the first 15 minutes. Right from the re-start excellent pressure from Ollie King and Michael Whitmore saw a free hit quickly taken and fed into the ‘D’ to allow Ollie King to slot past the keeper for his 3rd goal in 2 games, all in less than a minute from the push-back! This was the start to the half Dragons needed and continued to keep possession, defend well and play some good hockey.

Bury once again came back into the game and pulled a goal back through a short corner, at 2-1 the game was set for a ‘grandstand’ finish with 15 minutes left to play.

Not that Dragons let that effect them, as they continued their excellent work and again created chances to extend their lead, which they did through another short corner, whilst the first shot was saved, Paul Keating followed up the rebound to recover the 2 goal advantage.

The game was finished off with Paul Keating taking the ball from his own half into the oppositions area, playing across the ‘D’ which was coolly slotted home by Ben Harvey, a fine reward for his hard work running the right wing.

This was by far Dragons’ best all-round performance so far this season and the Man of the Match nomination proved that this was a real team effort with a 3 way tie until the final vote was revealed. Alec Bidet-Steele took the honours, who’s efforts were excellent, marking a key player out of the game for Bury and releasing the ball superbly to begin Dragons’ attacks.

A final thank you from the Captain, with 16 players the substitutes were hard to manage but everyone worked together and it was handled with great maturity. Well done.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Norwich Dragons 1s 2:0 Sprowston 1s

Norwich Dragons continued their run off good form and maintained their unbeaten record by dominating their match on Saturday against their visitors Sprowston Ladies.

The Dragon ladies played an attractive style of hockey keeping possession of the ball well and being patient in midfield before penetrating the Sprowston defence. The Dragons forward line found themselves with numerous goal scoring opportunities but a combination of excellent goal keeping by the Sprowston keeper, Sharon WEEKS, and strong disciplined defending by Sprowston’s back line kept the Dragons at bay until deep into the first half when Gail THOMAS struck the ball from an acute angle just inside the D which ricochet off the keeper and snuck into the corner of the goal. Although the home team continued to pile on the pressure bombarding the Sprowston defence with shots from open play and from short corners they were unable to increase their lead before going into half time.

The second half continued in the same vain with the Dragons in control and pinning Sprowston deep in their own half for much of the game but they continued to struggle to find the back of the net. A second goal finally came through some good passing hockey in midfield resulting in Hannah RONEY playing the ball through for player of the match Laura SHREEVE to steer into the goal.

The game was not short of drama with the Dragons being awarded two penalty flicks in the second half but again WEEKS would not be beaten easily and both efforts were saved.

This was a good performance from the Dragons who were strong throughout the team and never looked troubled by the visitors. The hosts worked hard and played some excellent passing hockey which led to numerous goal scoring opportunities for the strikers but it was not their day in front of goal. Although a good performance the Dragons must be more clinical as on another day they will be punished for not killing the game off with the amount of dominance and possession that they had.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
North Walsham 1s 5:1 Norwich Dragons 2s

Having had a good run of results, Dragons Ladies 2s went into this game knowing they would need to be at their best to come away with any points. Having started brightly, enjoying some good possession though Lynne Price in the heart of midfield, Dragons were disappointed to go behind to a couple of quick goals from North Walsham, through their speedy attacking players.

Dragons continued to press and forced a number of short corners, one of which, despite initially breaking down, was forced back into the D by Ally Windsor Waite, to Sarah Radley, who sensibly squared the ball for Hannah Hardy to eventually force the ball home.

Unfortunately at the start of the second half, Dragons sustained a number of injuries, which resulted in a loss of experienced players in the centre of the pitch. There was some valiant defending, most notably through player of the match Maddie Denman and a number of strong saves by Freddie Briscoe, however, North Walsham continued to press and eventually made this pressure count, as Dragons chased for the equaliser. A couple of quick goals, followed by a further late strike, sealed Dragons fate.

Valuable lessons to learn for this Dragon’s team, particularly around being first to every ball, being stronger in the tackle and generally ‘wanting it’ just that little bit more. Next week will see another tough test, however one which Dragons look forward too.

Norwich City 5s 0:8 Norwich Dragons 3s

Dragons dominated throughout the match with good passing and possession throughout the team. It was from this team play that Caroline Wolfe was the first to score for Dragons at close range. Wolfe was also instrumental in the second goal when her cross was converted by Hazel Sumner. Good passing between Olivia Thomas and Pollyanna Watson enabled Amy Brown to add her name to the score sheet when she finished the move with a short range push into the back of the goal. Dragons’ fourth goal came from a penalty corner. Pollyanna Watson injected the ball to Wolfe, who slipped it right to Olivia Thomas, who switched it left between Norwich City’s defenders, for Mel Widdows who made a clean, first time sweep into the goal.

At half time the score was 4 – 0 to Dragons, which was a promising start for Dragons, who so far this season have been a second half team.

Caroline Wolfe opened the scoring in the second half for Dragons when she poached a City defensive hit out. Dragons’ sixth goal came from a long through pass from Louise Davis at right defence into open space for Hazel Sumner who took on a few players before adding her second goal. Isi Christophers then converted a shot on goal from Caroline Wolfe by shimming the ball in just shy of the right post. Dragons’ final goal came from a penalty corner slipped left for Emma Moolman to strike firmly onto the City backboard.

It was a great team effort from the whole of the Dragons’ team with only the keeper Amy Forse not touching the ball. The Dragons’ player of the match was shared between Emma Moolman and Olivia Thomas.

Marshall Motor Group Norfolk Women’s League Division 2
Norwich Dragons 4s 3:0 Hornets

Another slow start for the Dragons, it seems that it takes a good 10 or 15 minutes for the individuals to start working together as a team. This was a scrappy match, and while the Dragons came away with 3 points, they are capable of playing to a higher standard than was demonstrated today. Flora Gregorie, Sue Cross and Holly Francis played created a solid midfield, driving the ball towards the D and making attempts to force play out wide, they battled for every ball and chased down players with a ragged determination. Despite several attempts at goal by Debbie Santa Clara, Annika Richardson and Scarlett Brown a goal was not to come for the first 20 minutes, when eventually a lifted ball from Scarlett went above the keeper. Thanks to the hard work of Catherine Bourassa (player of the match) who continuously kept taking the ball back down the wing, towards the goal, a second ball found the back of the net a strike from Scarlett and a deflection from a Hornets player.

After the break the Dragons scored relatively quickly, with a lovely shot from Holly, which rebounded off the keeper and into the goal. The Dragons certainly had the majority of possession during the second half and the ball rarely left the attacking end during the final twenty minutes of the match – defensive players almost acted as midfielders and the keeper must surely have felt a little bored by the end of it all. Players such as Freya Clogan and Gemma Rump worked hard to create spaces, draw the opposition away from position and switch play across the pitch; but clumping seemed to occur and on more than one occasion the Dragons were themselves drawn out of position and had to fight to get back on track. While no more goals were to come, the Dragons fought to the end to increase their goal difference.

Loddon 2s 0:1 Norwich Dragons 5s

Dragons scored their second successive 1-0 win, but this time they were even more dominant all over the pitch. In this game they created far more opportunities, and credit must go to Julie Elvin, playing in goal for the first time, who stopped several shots. The only goal was a beauty, proving the simplest moves stand the best chance. Bridget Le Good sent a through ball to Chiara Bond, whose first time cross found Lois McGregor, who swept home majestically. Laura Goodbun deserved more luck, using her pace to get into good positions and also working extremely hard to get back and defend. Chiara Bond played her best game of the season so far, exploiting her speed on the right and showing determination to get to the ball first.

There were interesting match-ups all over the pitch. Tash Hancock was solid in the Loddon defence, stopping the runs of Lisa Harwood (again showing plenty of determination), Ciara Willmott (who made some intelligent lateral moves) and Claire Fairhurst, who impresses everyone with her spirit and determination to improve her hockey. However, at the other end, Abi Cowe was playing even better in central defence, timing her tackles beautifully and dealing with the speedy raids of Alice Whitmore. Loddon had Becky Carver, the strongest crosser of the ball on the pitch, but Emma Buxton was always on hand to sweep them up and also did her share of successful tackles.

Katie Buxton continues to improve, and had another strong performance at right mid. Cath Power and Amiria Pounsford combined well down the left and set up some excellent attacks. Morag Morrison was seldom called on in the Loddon goal, but she certainly imposed herself on play if the Loddon forwards tried to move the ball close in the circle.

Laura, Abi and Bridget each secured three votes for player of the match, with other players also featuring.

Still to work on – some more practice on first touch and picking the ball up at speed. Shooting needs attention for power and accuracy. No prizes for the reverse high flick that scared the crows in their roosts behind the goal.

Norwich City 14:2 Norwich Dragons (Recorded result 7:2)

Ben Watson scored both of the goals – one from a short corner and one was a reverse stick hit. Both were very good goals.

Despite being 2 men down spirits were high. We were doing very well against a strong team and we were all pulling together. Andrew Carver was doing a great job defending against the strong attack of Norwich. Our attack was doing their best. Connor Adams and Ben Watson were trying hard to get in the right position but unfortunately narrowly missed the target. Things improved when we won a short corner and managed to turn it into a goal. At half time we were given a good team talk by Piers Gordon-Brown. The second half brought new scoring opportunities for Captain Robert Chaney Baxter with very helpful mid fielding by Raunaq Rai , Ben Harvey and exceptional defending by Josh Bingham.

Sam Harvey was a very important asset to the team saving lots of very tricky shots. Although we had the odds stacked against us we tried very hard and it was an excellent effort from all the team. We must also thank Norwich for lending us two players later in the second half.

Well done everyone for maintaining a fighting spirit in spite of the damp weather and a small team.

Ben Watson was player of the match after being a strong member of the team creating lots of chances and scoring both of Dragon’s goals.

Thanks to Ali Smyth for coaching and Ben Harvey and Piers Gordon-Brown for taking on the role of playing adults.

Norwich Dragons 1:1 Yarmouth

A great goal from a short corner by Isobel Keane gave Dragons a draw this week. Excellent play in the centre of the pitch from captain Anja Finegan and player of the match Aoife Lowe-Davies. Harriet Williams made an amazing save by running towards the player and taking the risk of leaving the goal open and free. Good to hear the opposition saying well done to our players.

Thanks to coach Natalie Beal and playing adults Emma Tabrett and Lizzie Cheesman.

11/11/12 – Under 16 Boys & Girls lose to Strong Opposition

In their first experience of the England Hockey Under 16 Clubs Championship, Norwich Dragons sides came up against strong opposition.

The girls lost 3-0 to Magpies in a reduced first round of fixtures, as a result of Norwich City withdrawing from the competition.  The next batch of fixtures for the girls takes place on Sunday 25th November at Lynnsport Kings Lynn when they play against Dereham and Pelicans.

On the boys side of the tournament, Norwich Dragons hosted teams from IES, Magpies and Norwich City in this round of fixtures.  Magpies will be the local favourites to go through from this group with several players having represented the East.  Due to availability problems with the boys, Dragons had  just 10 players for their first match against the favourites and came away with a 12-1 defeat.  Magpies then went on to beat IES 11-0, so clearly a very strong and in form team.

Dragons then played City, and by now the Dragons had a full team available, they lost narrowly 3-2.  City beat IES 4-1 in the other match at the Den.

The next set of fixtures for the boys is on Sunday 25th November hosted by IES and includes matches against Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds.  Then on Sunday 10th February the boys play Colchester and IES in Colchester.

Mens East League Division 2 North
Norwich Dragons 1s 4:1 Magpies 3s

Dragons started this game like a train, dominating possession and forcing Magpies to defend their goal in numbers. Despite this possession and many long corners Dragons were not able to convert the pressure into goals. Having weathered the storm Magpies were able to attack on the break and it was them that opened the scoring: Gavin Cole meeting a fine cross from the right wing to fire his first time shot into the goal past the Dragons’ keeper. Dragons continued to enjoy most of the possession and Alex Browne scored for Dragons after a good advantage from the umpire. Matt Knights made the score 2-1 to Dragons, finishing off a good attacking move from Dragons. Magpies continued to trouble Dragons on the break but were thwarted by quick reactions from Robbie Whiting in goal and an excellent goal line clearance from Danny Knights. The half-time score was 2-1 to Dragons.

Magpies showed strongly after half-time but were not able to breach the Dragons defence. Dragons continued their hard work from the 1st half, creating a number of chances, but were unable to hit the target. At the other end they were grateful to see a penalty stroke decision changed to a penalty corner and to weather a melee in front of goal after another penalty corner, where the Dragons players seemed to loose their bearings. Eventually Alex Browne completed his hat-trick with two good strikes.

Final score Norwich Dragons 4, Harleston Magpies 1

Dragons man of the match was Sam Parmenter

Mens East League Division 4 North East
Norwich City 4s 1:5 Norwich Dragons 2s

A rearranged game saw Dragons playing City at the UEA.  Dragons were hoping to build upon their performance last week and gain the 3 points to keep them near the top of the table.

Dragons started strong with a few attacks in the first few minutes.  However a counter-attack by City led to an unfortunate deflection from a Dragon stick into their own goal.  This galvanised Dragons into immediate action.  Player of the Match Adam Sayer brought the sides level after a few well placed passes, and great movement up the pitch topped of by a strong strike beyond the keeper.  The visitors soon took the lead thanks to captain Cley Hamilton’s slap shot following a great through ball from Mark Flatman.

The rest of the first half saw Dragons continue to work fantastically together as a team with precise passing, movement off the ball and determination in the tackles.  By half-time Dragons had scored 3 more goals through Simon Nisbet, Dan Cheesman and another well worked goal by Adam Sayer.  Dan Cheesman’s goal came after a strong run to the top of the D and an excellent strike to the bottom corner of the goal, giving the City keeper no chance.

A strong display in defence from Piers Gordon-Brown ensured any City attack down Dragon’s right side was quickly snuffed out resulting in Dragon’s keeper Dim Ives hardly having a touch of the ball in the half.  Halftime 5-1 Dragons.

The halftime team talk focussed on continuing the passing and movement shown by Dragons, and hopefully to get a few more goals.

City started strong in the second half and continued to press Dragons hard as they were pushing up the pitch to get a goal.  A couple of outstanding saves by Dim Ives kept the ball out and Dragons were able to have a few attacks themselves, although further goals proved elusive as City went on the defensive.

A strong team performance with which Dragons should be very pleased and will carry on into their game next week.

Fulltime score 5-1 to Dragons.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 5NE
Norwich Dragons 3s 6:0 Magpies 6s

Dragons Scorers: Will Kirby x 3, Jon Goodson, Mal Hant, Adrian Kemp.

Dragons started the match with fast stick to stick passing moving the ball from side to side of the pitch and probing down the flanks. This pressure proved too much for the opposition with an early goal being scored by Jon Goodson. This spurred the Dragons on and Henry Laming playing his first match for the team was providing a lot of pace and movement along the forward line. Further goals followed from Adrian Kemp, Will Kirby and Mal Hant who was playing his first match of the season and slotted in as if he had not been away. Half-time arrived with the team 4-0 ahead.

The team had a good team talk and started the second half determined to carry on in the same manner. Team debutant Barnie Abraham was having a great match at right back always providing an outlet to bring the ball out of defence and was providing attacking runs down the flank and great crosses into the D and deservedly was nominated man of the match. On the rare occasion Magpies attacked Dragons goalkeeper Sam Clark was smartly off his line to clear the ball away before the Magpies forwards could take advantage and he was ably supported by his defensive colleagues as they kept their sixth clean sheet of the season from seven matches. The score line was added to by two goals from Will Kirby to claim a hat-trick and but for good saves from the Magpies keeper the margin of victory could have been even greater.

This result gives the team confidence as they go into next week’s match against one of the other early season strong teams UEA 3s.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 6 North East
Norwich Dragons 4s 4:1 Norfolk Nomads 2s

Scorers: Ollie King x 2, Andy Key, Own goal

Game will be awarded 5:0 as a result of the Norfolk Nomads 1s game being conceded.

On the back of an excellent performance last week, Dragons wanted to get back to winning ways and faced a Nomads side who can sometimes be tricky and unpredictable.

Dragons started well and quickly got a foot hold on the game and through some good play resulted in them taking the lead in the first 10 minutes through an own goal.  Nomads immediately responded and got back into the game with some pressure themselves but this was quickly seen out as Dragons doubled their lead through an excellent top of the ‘D’ strike from Andy Key.

The remainder of the half ebbed and flowed with both teams enjoying good possession but the scored remained 2-0 to Dragons at half time.

Dragons once again were the quicker team out in the second half and started to dominate the game with some good passing and movement, continuous pressure on the Nomads 16 yard hit kept Dragons in control.  The midfield of Rob Jenkins, Chris Harrison and Paul Keating intercepted the ball on several occasions and kept the attacks coming with Dragons in the oppositions area for long periods.  Eventually they got their reward with Ollie King increasing the scoreline with 2 goals in quick succession.

Despite Dragons having majority of the attacking play, Nomads pulled a goal back after being allowed to get forward in sloppy circumstances, a minor setback against an excellent team performance.

Even with the result being awarded, Dragons enjoyed a strong game and need to carry this into next week.

Man of the match was awarded to Ollie King, taking his goal opportunities very well.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Loddon 1s 0:7 Norwich Dragons 1s

Dragons returned to their old stomping ground to play the team with whom they shared a pitch for three seasons.

The visitors dominated the first half, having many attacks and absorbing Loddon’s attacks efficiently.  Dragons showed great control of the ball with some excellent passages of play, although at times the final ball into the D was lacking.  The first goal was scored after Claire Baker received the ball in the D with her back to the goal, dribbled past the oncoming keeper and neatly passed the ball into the goal with her reverse stick before the defence could recover their positions.  Dragon’s second goal came after an attacking run down the right by Hannah Roney ended with Natalie Beal sweeping the ball passed the oncoming keeper.

Pressure from the visiting team put Loddon on the back foot in their own D and a resulting short corner led to Dragons third goal.  Captain Hannah Roney was quickest to react to a scramble at the post, slotting the ball into the goal from close range.

Three nil at half time to Dragons.

After a team talk from Pete Thomas, Dragons came out for the second half determined to build on their half time lead.

The game continued to be dominated by Dragons, with the solid defence of Emily Rolls, Angela Murgatroyd and Rowie York-Smith snuffing out any Loddon attacks and central midfield being controlled by Karen O’Neill-Simpson and Debs Smith.

It was not long before Dragons scored their fourth goal.  Neat work between Hannah Roney and Natalie Beal saw Claire Baker converting from near the penalty spot.

Two further goals came in quick succession with Natalie Beal scoring Dragons fifth and sixth goals.  A save by the keeper from a short corner strike by Rolls saw Beal flicking the ball over the flailing keeper to make it five-nil to Dragons.  Then some neat work in the D between Lizzie Cheesman and Claire Baker saw Beal scoring from an acute angle after the keeper deflected the ball into her path.

Beal’s fourth, and Dragon’s seventh, came after determined work from Claire Baker in the D, with her shot being deflected to player of the match Natalie Beal, who calmly slotted the ball home.

A convincing win by Dragons sees them continue their great start to the season.  Dragons look forward to the challenge that Sprowston will bring next week.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Norwich Dragons 2s 3:1 Ipswich & East Suffolk 1s

With players missing for various reasons, Dragons were forced to ‘shuffle the pack’ asking players to play in a different formation and some different positions. As a result, the team took a while to settle, and it is fair to say IES had the better of opening exchanges, forcing a number of short corners, which were well dealt with by Maddie Denman and the rest of the Dragons defence.

Gradually, Dragons started to get into the game, however their performance and work rate was not up to the high standards of previous weeks. With Ally Windsor-Waite and Niamh Lowe-Davies building a good understanding on the right, they started to create some promising attacks, however going into the half-time break the score remained goal-less.

The half-time teamtalk focussed on the need to be more ‘switched on’ and increase the work rate. The team listened to what was said and didn’t disappoint, upping the ball speed, retaining possession better and generally working that much harder for each other.

Dragons first goal came from hard work on the right, with intelligent running upfront to stretch the opposition defence allowing Sarah Radley to win the ball and move it on quickly to Saskia Delacave, who swept the ball in expertly from the top of the D – a classy goal.

The second came quite quickly, with Player of the Match Ally Windsor-Waite, linking up well with Niamh Lowe-Davies. Ally attacked the D, leaving a number of IES defenders in her wake, to pull back a pin-point pass to Sarah Radley who found herself in a great position on the P spot to place the ball over the keeper.

IES never gave up, and put further pressure on the Dragons defence. They pulled a goal back with a very smartly taken goal by Maria Wheelen, coming through from defence.

Dragons showed how much they have matured as a team, Lucy Hopgood continued to pass the ball around nicely in midfield, with Kerri White and Sarah Wagstaff keeping control and discipline in the centre at the back. Dragons kept attacking, with the 3rd goal coming following a bit of a scramble in the D, Laura Bailey however kept her cool, and slotted the ball past the keeper to secure the points for the Dragons.

This Dragons team is really starting to build together nicely. Their desire to dig deep and work hard for each other will stand them in very good stead for the rest of the season.

Marshall Motor Group Norfolk Women’s League Division 1
North Walsham 2s 0:6 Norwich Dragons 3s

Dragons seemed to start the game better prepared than North Walsham and looked the stronger side.  In open play, Dragons passed the ball from the left, back and round their defence, up the right wing to be slotted into the North Walsham goal by Emma Moolman.  Although Dragons attacked through much of the first half, the ball was frequently given away as North Walsham defended doggedly.  North Walsham were fast on the break and kept Dragons’ defence on their guard.  Dragons won their first penalty corner just as the half time whistle blew.  Hazel Medler stepped up to the ‘D’ and converted the corner with a straight strike, giving Dragons a more comfortable lead.

Despite moments of good play in the first half, Dragons’ captain, Amelia Dawson, felt the team could play better.  Her team talk was tough but obviously effective because Dragons stepped up a gear in the second half.  The goals flowed.  In open play, Klara Moolman scored by taking the ball around the North Walsham keeper.  Amy Brown did the same after receiving a slip left from a penalty corner.  Emma Moolman added her second when she converted a cross from Pollyanna Watson.  Finally, Amelia Dawson dribbled the ball on her own from a long corner on the left around several players along the base line to score from an almost impossible angle.

Despite the final score, North Walsham challenged the Dragons’ defence on several strong attacks, which resulted in Dragons’ keeper, Amy Forse making several good clearances and Hazel Medler deservedly being voted Dragons’ player of the match.  Special mention to Sophie Thomas, who built many of the Dragons’ attacks with great passing and support to Olivia Thomas on the right.  A big ‘Thank you’ to Sophie Farrow for coming up from the Dragons 5s to play a credible rolling substitute.

The Dragon’s opened the game in their usual style… lulling the opposition into a false sense of security by watching them score in the first thirty seconds of the game!

However, the Dragons shook themselves up and began pushing forward, Sue Cross doing a fantastic job on the right wing.

Dragon’s won their first corner of the match, which resulted in a beautiful equaliser by Annika Richardson.  Much of the game was in the Sprowston half, and the Dragons were rewarded with a 2nd goal, put into the D by Holly Francis for the slip into goal by Debbie Santa Clara.  Despite these two goals, the Dragons were a little chaotic in their positioning.

Stand-in captain Sue took the opportunity during a break in the game to give a little pep talk to the team and a few changes in player positions were made for the 2nd half.

These changes and a greater awareness of personal positioning saw the Dragons putting up a cohesive offence, keeping the ball up in the Sprowston 25, with some good work between Beth Bygrave, Sue Cross and Marcy Windsor-Waite, backed up by Flora Gregorie.  Beth in particular did a sterling job consistently stopping the ball getting through the mid-field and bringing it back towards the D.  The defence did have some occasional work to do: Abi Cowe, Megan Harvey, Gemma Rump and Laura Bruce holding the line, and goalie Giselle Nieuwoudt managing to move her frozen limbs enough to make some good saves.  The Dragon’s 3rd goal was off a short corner, Beth making a solid strike for Debbie to deflect into goal at the left post.  The final goal was brought in to the D by Holly, passed to Annika who placed the ball expertly, helping Debbie coming in on the right to make it a hat-trick with an easy open goal.

Player of the Match went to Beth, closely followed by Marcy.

Norwich Dragons 5s 1:0 Hornets

Goalscorer: Lisa Harwood

Player of the Match: The Team

Dragons were not able to field quite their strongest squad, but by showing far more commitment this week they managed to squeeze past Hales Hornets whose second half tactic of keeping one high forward nearly brought a reward. Dragons’ tactic was to start conservatively, with Lois McGregor as sweeper, and Rhianna Belham, Emma Buxton and Katie Buxton in defence. With Rosie Korn running the midfield, every Hornets attack was dealt with comfortably – but Dragons did not have enough bite in attack.

The second half was more exciting. Dragons dropped the sweeper role, and Sophie Farrow, Jade Blanchflower and Shantelle Melton all provided lateral runs up front and Lisa Harwood played high forward. Hornets also began to find their own high forward, so Chiara Bond, Lizzy McDonnell, Armiria Pounsford and Katie had to work hard defensively as well as create attacking moves. With time running out, desperate measures were called for. Bridget Le Good will probably never dare to run with the ball again, but managed to beat three players down the left, move the ball across the baseline and get the ball through to Lisa Harwood. Lisa came to the ball with her back to goal, turned and pushed the shot home. Lisa had rocked up as a last minute substitute for the injured Nicky King, and was duly mobbed by her grateful teammates.

The match was far from over. Hornets redoubled their efforts, and Morag Morrison marked a welcome return in goal with a good diving save and some strong clearances. With two minutes to go, Hornets got past Morag, but Bridget was on the line to block the shot and Lois was on hand to sweep away to safety – a typical example of the resolute job Lois did all match, an unsung hero.

Dragons can look forward to another ‘scrap’ next week and in training must focus on picking up the ball at speed, thinking about where their pass is going before they make it, and doing something about their flippin’ feet.  With such a good team performance, there was no clear winner of the player of the match, and all the players can congratulate themselves on a job well done.

27/10/12 – Match Reports

Mens East League Division 2 North
City of Peterborough 1:1 Norwich Dragons 1s

Dragons made the long trip to Peterborough looking to pick up their first points on the road this season against a side promoted into their division. Dragons were expecting a tough game against a disciplined side, with Peterborough starting life in Div 2 well, beaten just once in their opening six games, and that by a single goal.

For probably the first time this season Dragons came out the stronger side, passing the ball quickly and opening up gaps in the Peterborough defence. Dragons then suffered a scare when centre-back Ed Smith was struck in the face by an attempted aerial pass. Luckily the ball only grazed Ed and he was able to return to the pitch a few minutes later. After a couple of half chances, Dragons won the first penalty corner of the game. The injection was slightly off, but Rupert Snelling improvised well to crash a shot into the corner of the goal. After initially awarding the goal, the umpire conferred with his colleague and adjudged the shot to have been too high, a correct decision which unfortunately ruled the goal out.

Despite this disappointment, Dragons continued to press Peterborough hard, with both Jason Wolfe and Alex Browne having half chances that they couldn’t quite convert. Dragons did take the lead after some good work down the right by Lewis Wilkins, who drove forward and fired in a cross towards Matt Knights in the D. Knights met it with a first time sweep into the corner of the goal.
Dragons continued to press through the rest of the half, but couldn’t find any further breakthroughs. The only scare of the half came when Peterborough broke in numbers and eliminated Robbie Whiting in the Dragons goal, only to find Dragons Captain Danny Knights covering to block the shot.

Half-time Peterborough 0-1 Dragons

Dragons half-time team talk focused on keeping up the level of play from the first 20 minutes of the game and trying to be a bit more incisive in the final third. Peterborough, however, had other ideas and stepped their game up after the break, gaining more possession.

Following a broken down Dragons attack, Peterborough broke forwards in numbers and found themselves with an overload on the Dragons left hand side. A couple of quick passes eliminated the Dragons defence leaving Peterborough with a two on one against Whiting, who was left with no chance as one forward slipped the ball to his colleague for a simple finish.
Despite Peterborough’s increased possession, they struggled to create chances, with the Dragons defence shutting down the Peterborough forward line, and continuing to launch attacks of their own. Despite this, Dragons were unable to create clear chances of their own, Sam Parmenter found his way through a couple of tackles but a Peterborough defender made a crucial last second tackle before he could pull the trigger. Alex Browne also went close, but could only knock Wolfe’s cross straight at the keeper as he stretched to make contact.

As Dragons pushed for the winner they left themselves open at the back and were indebted to Whiting who made himself big to turn away two late Peterborough strikes that could have made for a different outcome.
Dragons did win a late penalty corner, but a miss-trap forced Snelling onto his reverse stick and he was unable to get a clean connection on his effort.

Full Time – Peterborough 1-1 Dragons

Dragons came away pleased to have picked up their first away point, but on a weekend of draws in their division, were disappointed not to have taken the 3 points their first half performance should have resulted in.

Next week Dragons welcome local rivals Harleston Magpies to The Den, who will be looking to move up the table following their first win of the season this weekend.

Norwich Dragons 2s 1:0 Sudbury 3s

The Dragon 2XI came out strong against Sudbury at the den. Maintaining high pressure and camping high up in Sudbury’s territory. Good movement and passing proving not good enough to break down the Sudbury defence. Debut were handed to youngsters Will Ives and Henry Laming who very much held there own playing great hockey and showing a clean pair of heels to get down the byline before crossing fantastic balls. The match goalless heading into the break.

The second half witnessed more dragon pressure. Adam Sayer providing a delightful display of passing and ball retention. After a couple of surges from Sudbury the dragons effort finally paid off with a quick midfield movement leaving Dan Cheesman to dispatch the ball low into the goal. The dragons held on for the rest of the half to victory. Final score 1-0, joint players of the match Henry Laming, Adam Sayer and Cley Hamilton.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 5NE
Bury St Edmunds 3s 0:0 Norwich Dragons 3s

This match was played in the first Autumn weather of the season with the teams have to play in heavy rain and strong winds and the sky becoming so grey and dark that floodlights had to be turned on at 11:30 when the second half started!

Despite these difficult conditions both teams played good passing hockey. Dragons made the brighter start playing strongly down their right flank with Jon Price playing John Ives the ball for him to cross from the base-line. From one of these attacks the Bury keeper had to make two great reflex saves to prevent Dragons taking the lead. Bury started to come into the match and Dragons keeper Sam Clark made a good save from a drag flick from a Bury short corner. As the first half progressed the match became a midfield battle with the Dragons midfielders Jon Goodson, George Walker and Rich Phillis matching their opposite numbers.

In the second half Bury gained the ascendency but were prevented from scoring by solid defending by Peter Davison and man of the match Jon Price who was also always providing an outlet to start attacks from defence. When Bury did break through Sam Clark was smartly off his line to snuff out the danger. Dragons were making a few openings with fast breaks but neither team could find the net. The match ended in a draw which was a fair result for both teams in a match which was played in very good spirits by all the players.

This was the Dragons 3rd team’s first real challenge in this Division, which they passed well.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 6 North East
Norwich Dragons 4s 2:2 Norwich Exiles 1s

Given their league position, Dragons 4s expected a tough game against Norwich Exiles, and this was certainly the case.

The initial part of the game belonged to Exiles, with Dragons playing as though nervous of their opposition, with unusually poor passing and tackling. It was a ball not stopped by the defence that gave Exile’s Stuart Hall a chance, which he took extremely well. This gave Dragons the wakeup call they needed as they started to settle on the ball. Ray Hansell at centre back had a superb game and from here on allowed nothing to pass.

Dragons began to move the ball through the midfield and Rob Jenkins started to get the ball in behind the Exiles defence. Exiles conceded a short corner which Andy Key injected to Mike Banham who’s usual accurate strike went straight past the keeper to level the game at 1 -1 for half time.

The second half saw Exiles’ Stuart Hall bag his second to put the visitors 2 -1 ahead, slightly against the run of play. Dragons continued to penetrate behind the Exiles defence and this pressure eventually paid off when an Exiles defender did not bring the ball under control quickly enough, allowing Dave Thornton to pounce, he rounded the keeper and popped it into the net. The score remained at 2 – 2 until the final whistle. Overall a good performance from the team and a good result against an experienced Exiles side.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Norwich Dragons 1s 3:3 Norwich City 1s

This local derby didn’t fail to disappoint the neutrals. With both sides having been relegated from Division 1 last year and going into this game unbeaten it was always going to be a very candid and tight game. Although, in the main the teams shared the possession in the first half, it was City that edged it but they failed to penetrate the Norwich Dragons defence. The Dragons were not quite on their game today, their first touch was sloppy but they maintained their discipline by keeping their shape and defended solidly. The Dragons were patient and waited their opportunity. This came mid way through the first half. An excellent passage of play led to a goal; the City keeper failing to clear the ball from the area but some good improvisation by Nat BEAL gave the Dragons the lead. City responded just before half time; a short corner strike from Emily ANTHONY deflected into the net.

After their half time team talk the Dragons came out fighting working hard and putting the city players under pressure. This forced an error by one of the defenders; a free hit intercepted by Marie JAMES who found Laura SHREEVE in the circle who struck the ball sweetly to make it 2-1. With 15 minutes to go the Dragons looked comfortable and in control of the game and looked the more likely to score but City, who did not stop working hard, managed to skip past two Dragons defenders and win a short corner which they were clinical with making it 2-2. With Dragons pushing forwards to find a winner, City broke again and were awarded a penalty corner which again Emily ANTHONY smartly finished to get complete her hat-trick. To the Dragons credit they always had belief in their ability and showed great character to bring the game back to 3-3. Marie JAMES finding SHREEVE in space again who drove the ball to the back line finding Claire BAKER with a pin-point cross which BAKER connected with, leaving the City keeper no chance.

This wasn’t the best performance from the Dragons although in the second half they played better and looked the likely winners but City worked harder and definitely seemed more determined and ‘up for this game’. In the end a draw was probably a fair result.

Broadland 1s 0:6 Norwich Dragons 2s

With the rain and hail falling relentlessly, the Taverham pitch was completely saturated, however a glimmer of blue sky on the horizon, meant that sensibly the decision was made to delay the start for half an hour.

Dragons were keen to get going and started brightly, earning an early short corner, which Debs Smith aimed towards the far post, for Niamh Lowe-Davies to deflect the ball past the keeper. Having got the early goal, Dragons continued to press hard, with Player of the Match Laura Bailey and Saskia Delacave playing some lovely hockey in attack.

Broadland won a series of short corners in quick succession, these were expertly dealt with, particularly by Maddie Denman who was out quickly to break down play and Freddie Briscoe in goal, who dominated the line with some strong kicking.

Dragons made their extra work rate and desire to win this game count, with further goals before half time, two from Hannah Hardy and two from Kerri White, who made some excellent runs in from the left, picking up the ball pulled back to her on the P spot and confidently slotting past the Broadland keeper.

The second half saw the sun shine, and despite playing some good hockey, Dragons found themselves under a bit more pressure from Broadland, however the returning Lizzie Moulton marshalled the defence superbly and as always Maddie Denman was outstanding at left-back, both being well supported by Ally Windsor-Waite.

With Debs Smith, Ruth Willmott and Louise Bunning all strong in midfield, Dragons finally got their sixth following a run down the right by Hannah Hardy, pulling the ball back to Debs Smith, to neatly tuck inside the near post.

A really strong performance by a Dragons team who showed the sort of desire and commitment which will stand them in great stead in this League.

Norwich Dragons 3s 2:0 Sprowston 2s

Norwich Dragons ladies threes started off strongly during this home game against Sprowston 2s. Some lovely passing and excellent lateral running from forwards and midfielders presented several opportunities for Dragons despite the hail. Sprowston had a strong defence who continued to keep Dragons out the goal. Sprowston had several breaks in play and Dragons defenders did a great job in clearing the ball and switching play back in favour of Dragons so the game felt very “end to end”.

The second half saw Dragons really fall into the lovely hockey which has kept them at the top of the table so far this season. Lynne Price and Olivia Thomas ran tirelessly in midfield creating opportunities. A lovely cross from Caroline Wolfe found Amy Brown’s stick and Dragons had their first goal.

Second goal for Dragons resulted from some excellent overlapping on the right by Olivia Thomas and Amelia Dawson and was struck beautifully into the back of the goal by Lynne Price. Final score Dragons 2 – Sprowston 0

The Dragons’ Player of the Match was Amy Brown.

Norwich Dragons 5s 0:5 Sprowston 3s

There is currently a fragility about the 5s play as they try to accommodate the 27 or so players in their squad, build up their core skills and come to terms with using the ‘diamond’ which, once they get it, will strengthen their game.

Unfortunately for the 5s, the Sprowston players who had already played at a higher level were still full of running and power, and gave them an object lesson in how to hit the ball and how to get to the ball first. The 5s kept plugging away, but all too often they wilted under the pressure and passes were either aimless or not gathered up. When they did get the ball to do the work, keep their composure and move laterally, they showed glimpses of the side they can be. Goalkeeper Laura Tuck was player of the match for a very spirited performance which kept the score respectable.

Lizzy McDonnell, Beth Elgood, Rhianna Belham and Cath Power all showed improving form. The 5s will not be discouraged, and will go back to training knowing what they have to do to get back on track, and will carry more of it forward into their game next week.

20/10/12 – Match Reports

Mens East League Division 2 North
Norwich Dragons 1s 6:1 Bourne 1s

Dragons returned to winning ways this week with a moral boosting 6-1 win at home over Bourne-Deeping.

Dragons struggled to gain possession of the ball in the early minutes and found themselves quickly a goal behind to a Bourne-Deeping break away. Gradually Dragons were able to play themselves back into the game and they started to put pressure on the Bourne-Deeping defence and create some attacking pressure. Rupert Snelling opened the scoring for Dragons, tying the game at 1-1. Bourne-Deeping continued to look to hit Dragons on the break and won a number of penalty corners, but were unable to convert any of them, Robbie Whiting standing strong in goal. Dragons continued to create chances and Steve Woodward scored from a well worked penalty corner to make it 2-1 to Dragons. The score at half-time was 2-1 to Dragons.

Dragons came out strongly in the second half, putting in their best performance of the season so far. Bourne-Deeping were limited to a few corners and chances in the second half, while Dragons piled on the pressure. Alex Browne made it 3-1 to Dragons before Matt Knights scored the goal of the game, latching onto Lewis Wilkins’ fantastic through ball, before rounding the keeper and calmly slotting the ball reverse stick into the open goal. Matt Knights scored his second being first to latch onto a free ball in the circle and smashing it home. Alex Browne completed his brace to round off the scoring for Dragons. Final score 6-1 to Dragons.

Dragons man of the match was Lewis Wilkins.

IES 2s 5:1 Norwich Dragons 2s

Dragons 2XI came up against a strong IES team that were particularly organised and not shy in front of goal. A couple of defensive errors led to the first couple of goals for IES as Dragons fought hard not to concede more Dim Ives pulling off save after save. The Dragons fought hard to level but only to concede one more before the break to a counter attack after a surge of dragon pressure in IES circle. Dragons down by 3 at the interval.

From the start of the second half the Dragons went on the offensive. Pushing up from the back and a good display of passing from Adam Sayer providing opportunities on goal. Finally a strong dribble from Dan Cheesman struck lucky with a shot lashed into the bottom corner. Momentum was swinging the Dragons way until IES got in behind the defence with a large arial catching the dragons out for an easy tap in which was shortly followed by another. IES 5-1 Dragons man of the match Adam Sayer.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 5NE
Norwich Dragons 3s 7:0 Felistowe 3s

Dragons with the words of the Pre-match team talk fresh in their minds steamed into their opponents and took control of the match.  This early domination was converted into a goal when John Ives collected the ball in the right wing position dribbled to the back line and cut the ball back for Rich Phillis to coolly score. Dragons continued to dominate and even when Felixstowe had the ball the pressure applied and good marking by Dragons allowed them to win the ball back quickly. Further goals came with a Adrian Kemp shot from a short corner arrowed at speed into the corner of the goal. Two goals from Jon Goodson one from a short corner variation and the other from open play gave the team a 4-0 lead at half-time. Dragons were winning the ball in defence when Felixstowe attacked and quickly breaking forward.

The second half began with Dragons determined not to let Felixstowe get any opportunity to get back into the match. The Dragons attacks continued and Jon Goodson completed his hat-trick and a sixth goal was added by Matt Jenkins. Dragons captain George Walker was having a strong match in the centre of midfield starting many of the teams attacks with powerful dribbling runs forward. A final seventh goal was scored by Matt Jenkins who pressurised a Felixstowe player into a mistake and took the ball into the D and found the gap past the keeper into the goal to give a final score of 7-0.

This was a great display by the Dragons putting into practise the passing skills they had been coached in recent training sessions.

Many thanks to Phil York-Smith for selflessly organising the rotation of the substitutes.

Ipswich&East Suffolk turned out a side far stronger than their league position suggested, they started well with Dragons struggling to find the right shape to defend against them. Ipswich scored two in the first half. Goals could be described as “ fairly easy” as we lost control of the ball in our circle on both occasions. We had a number of good attacks but could not convert even from the resulting penalty corners.

The 2 – 0 score line at half time was challenged when Henry Laming walked through the Ipswich defence and his reverse stick shot was unexpected and rocketed in to the back of the net. Dragons settled a bit gaining more control in the mid field. Alec Bidet-Steele making some super long passes. Andy Key played his part in defence covering a lot of ground to help with the attack too. Ipswich’ centre back took control of the game. His positional play and superb distribution left Dragons chasing shadows for the latter part of the game. A cross from the right was collected by the Ipswich forward in our circle and converted to leave Ipswich with a 3 – 1 victory.

Man of the match was Henry Laming in spite of his five minutes in the sin-bin.

Old Buckenham 1s 0: 18 Norwich Dragons 1s

After their hard fought victory last week the Dragons Ladies were full of confidence and determined to put in another strong performance hoping to maintain their unbeaten record and topple the East North Division 2 league table.

The Dragons prepared well for the match being focused in their warm up and this undoubtedly resulted with them starting the game at a high tempo and steaming into their opponent’s half taking control of the match with Marie JAMES scoring just 45 seconds into the game. With the early lead it seemed that the Dragons tough training regime was finally paying dividends as their hockey flowed freely resulting in goals being scored at regular intervals throughout the game.

At half time Old Buckenham, who had limited numbers in their squad, suffered a number of injuries and were helped out by some of their young second team players. These players, as with the seniors, gave a good account of themselves; they maintained their discipline and worked hard throughout the match. Despite the scoreline this group of players kept their togetherness as a team and the manner in which they conducted themselves they are a credit to their club.

There were some excellent performances from the Dragons team in particular Emma TABRETT and player of the match Gail THOMAS.  The goal scorers for the Dragons were Laura SHREEVE (5), Gail THOMAS (4), Marie JAMES (3), Claire BAKER (3), Nat BEAL (2) and Hannah RONEY (1).

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Norwich Dragons 2s 1:2 Framlingham 1s

Perfect weather for hockey, saw Dragons II’s take to the pitch high in confidence having had two good wins in recent weeks. Dragons were up against some tough opposition in an experienced Framlingham side, who were first to the ball in the early encounters and stronger in the tackle. Despite some good play in the middle of the pitch, particularly from Debs Smith, and tenacious tackling from Maddie Denman, Dragons went behind to a goal at the far post.

Dragons grew into the game, with Laura Bailey and Saskia Delacave making some good runs upfront, supported by Sarah Radley. The end of the first half and the start of the second saw Dragons keeping possession of the ball much better and they started to dominate the game.  Framlingham were always dangerous in the break however, and Player of the Match Freddie Briscoe, kept Dragons in the game with a series of great one on one saves.

Eventually, following a number of short corners, Debs Smith got a good shot on goal, which was then forced goalwards, hitting a Framlingham foot on the line. Dragons were awarded a penalty flick, which was slotted away by Hannah Hardy.
With a few minutes remaining, a slight lapse in concentration allowed Framlingham to get a player on the back line who then crossed along the face of goal, for an attacker to slot in at the back post.
Whilst a disappointing end to the game for the Dragons, this was always going to be a tough encounter.  There is a lot to build on, however the Dragons need to learn to become a little more tenacious and be first to every ball…..this will come as the team continue to grow together.

Yarmouth 2s 0:3 Norwich Dragons 3s

Dragons dominated throughout the match, skilfully passing the ball around the pitch playing a game of possession hockey.  They kept the ball away from the Yarmouth defence, by moving play from side to side and up and down.  Then a quickly taken free pass by Louise Davis, opened up a gap for Olivia Thomas to dribble the ball around a defender ending in a cross for Amy Brown to put the ball into the Yarmouth goal.

With Dragons pushing high into the Yarmouth half, a quick break from Yarmouth forced Dragons’ goalie, Amy Force, to leave her line and make a challenging tackle to keep a clean sheet.

Dragons continued to play a patience game and Yarmouth appeared to tire in the second half.  A second goal came from Sophie Cullens, who converted a fast cross from Lucy Hopgood on the right.  The game finished 3 nil to Dragons when Pollyanna Watson scored, assisted by Caroline Wolfe.

With five wins out of five matches, Dragons maintain the top slot in their division above Sprowston on goal difference.

The Dragons’ Player of the Match was shared between Olivia Thomas and Lucy Hopgood.

Norwich Dragons 4s 6:1 Magpies 6s

Dragon’s stormed to victory in this exciting and fast paced match. The dragon’s took a little time to come together during the first half, with team members settling into play and position, but soon the determination of the team was revealed, a selection of strength and experience combined with youth and energy proved to be a tough team to beat. The first goal was scored by Magpies – a lucky break into space, but this was their only opportunity in the first half and the majority of play stayed in the Magpies’ 25. Dragons had many opportunities to level the score and eventually managed to convert a short corner just before half time, thanks to Scarlett Brown.

The second half saw the Dragons start to push their advantage with Annika Richardson (player of the match) scoring an amazing goal from the very edge of the D that went in the bottom right corner. This was soon followed by goals from Debbie Santa Clara, Catherine Bourassa, Lucy Campbell and another from Annika. All made possible due to careful positioning, clever passing and maintaining position across the pitch.  Marcy Windsor-Waite, Megan Harvey and Lynne Price kept a strong midfield – that was difficult for the Magpies to breakthrough and on the rare occasion this happened Laura Bruce and Freya Clogan channeled players beautifully enabling a clean second half.

This was an excellent team effort, with the Dragons’ fours playing as a consolidated and positive team.

Marshall Motor Group Norfolk Women’s League Division 2
Lowestoft Railway 2s  2:3 Norwich Dragons 5s
Dragons turned in their most determined performance of the season so far and were rewarded with a narrow win over Rails, who as always battled for every minute of the game. Dragons had been looking forward to Sue Cullum ‘breaking her break’ and donning the keeper’s kit. Sadly, Sue was taken ill on the day, but had considerately left her kit at the Den. So the first hero was Lois McGregor, who considered playing kicking back – until she discovered how far she could kick the ball with the kickers on. She was gradually persuaded to put on more and more kit until she was wearing, well, most of it. Her nerves were still jangling when Niamh McLaughlin drove straight into the circle to open the scoring for Rails, but after that she was calm and composed and made some excellent blocks.

Dragons equalised when Bridget Le Good inside the 23 spotted Laura Goodbun available for an early free hit, and Laura’s perfect pass found Rosie Korn who made an equally perfect sweep past the keeper. End to end play saw the Dragons midfield gradually establish mastery. Chiara Bond showed she is far more skilled and composed  as a midfielder with a turn of speed. As forecast by Coach Pete Thomas, Rosie Korn could make her reputation at the top of the diamond with some telling passes, runs and tackling back. Holly Francis as ever, was a reliable asset left and right and Katie Buxton proved that she can play a defensive or attacking role in midfield.

The defenders were a stronger unit this week. Abi Cowe commanded the centre, and when Dragons were pushing for the winner, she led the press.  Beth Elgood continues to improve week by week and put in some strong tackles.. Emma Buxton was very hard to beat, and Nicky King AT LAST made her Dragons’ debut and proved what we suspected all along – that she is just what the Dragons need. With four, or sometimes five, true defenders available to the team, the 5s have some genuine options. It gives defenders a chance to take a breather or take on instructions.

Upfront, Laura Goodbun (Dragons’ player of the match) was on fire and Rails tended to back off when Laura went a-running. She gave Dragons the lead with a well-rehearsed and well-struck penalty which a defender could only touch into the net. Her winner was even better, demonstrating her ability to take on defenders and finish with composure. The other forwards, Lizzy McDonnell and Sophie Farrow, went on some great runs, left and right, and if the 5s can pick up their crosses and passes into the circle, the goals will flow.

Rails were putting some good moves together, and had taken the score to 2-2 when Hannah Atkin fired home an excellent chip ‘second hit’ from a penalty corner. Lois kept her head up and marshalled her Dragons, who played bravely and put their bodies in the way of the ball – though probably Bridget should not have used her head for a clearance. Thanks, Rails, for the plasters.

Rails could well think that with a bit more luck, they could have earned a draw. But Dragons will say that after recent disappointments, this was the day when only victory was good enough.

Norwich Dragons 4:6 Pelicans

Dragons had a very interesting game which we were unlucky to lose 6-4 to Pelicans.

In the first half they had the better possession and took advantage of that going 1-0 up after putting our defence of Jonty Gosling, Andy Carver, Mark Savill and Edward Murphy under pressure. Unfortunately there was a ten minute delay as a Pelicans player was hit in the face by a ball. We wish him well.  We then hit back with a nice goal from Josh Bingham only for them to finish the first half 3-1 up.

In the second half we scored two brilliant goals from Josh Bingham again and Robert Chaney Baxter. After more intense pressure on the defence and keeper Sam Harvey they scored two more to which we replied with another goal from Robert Chaney Baxter. Pedro Goss and Rohan Kaushal were getting into good positions out wide and coming back to defend. Unfortunately Mark Savill was yellow carded but when he returned he displayed some great defending. Throughout the match Connor Adams made some good runs and got into some nice positions up the front. They then scored the sixth goal.

Thanks to all who came. Special thanks to the men Danny Knights and Rob Wagstaff. Also thanks to our umpires Doug and Sue.

Josh Bingham got a well deserved man of the match.

Match report by Sam Harvey.

Norwich Dragons Girls under 10s

Dragons made an impressive start to the tournament with a 1-0 win (Scarlett Udy) over Magpies B.  It was a superb team performance with some fantastic passing on display.  The mid-field of Jemima Watson and Scarlett Udy worked together well making it difficult for the opposition to make any ground in the Dragons half.

In their second match, Dragons consolidated on their early win with a solid 0-0 draw against Norwich City B.  The defence made up of Sofia Grove, Sasha Hohnen and Simran Rai made some important tackles to keep the game even.

The girls went on to show grit and determination in their next match to come back from 1-0 down against Dereham.  After some persistant tackles in the mid-field by Annabelle Hodgson and Octavia Udy, Scarlett Udy scored a break away goal to draw the game level.  Despite further pressure from Dereham Simran Rai helped to secure the draw with a fine performance in goal.

Following a frustrating game against Norwich City A, the mini-Dragons rounded off the tournament with a well earned 0-0 draw against Pelicans.

Without a regular goal keeper the girls showed great team spirit by volunteering to take it in turns in goal.  Overall, it was an excellent debut for the team putting them in a good position to develop further in the future.

Team – Scarlett Udy, Annabelle Hodgson, Sofia Grove (Cpt), Jemima Watson, Sasha Hohnen, Octavia Udy, Simran Rai.

Coaches – David Pentin and Claire Hupton

Norwich Dragons Girls under 12s

Huge credit must go to all nine players in the U12 side for the tournament held at Harleston, and especially to the new members of the squad – Dani Harvey, Lara Taylor and Jodi Rump – who looked completely at home.

The day started with the sad news that Aimee Lowry was injured, and therefore the squad would be one player down. Despite that, the team went into the first game against Magpies B full of confidence, and playing some fantastic hockey. The game was sealed when Lucy Morton ran half the length of the pitch with the ball, out-pacing the defence and calmly slotting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. The defence then worked hard to ensure the first three points were suitably claimed.

The second game, against a strong Norwich City B team, saw the team concede an early goal, but rally strongly once they started to believe in themselves and it was no surprise when a combination of Lucy and the skipper Rachel Bruce earned a well-deserved draw.

With seven games to play, there were some concerns that the team might run out of steam – having only one substitute – but the effort was tremendous throughout. There followed a goalless draw against Pelicans, which in all honesty the Dragons girls could easily have won on a different day. They hit the post and had a number of great chances narrowly miss. Ella Mansley was particularly instrumental in controlling the midfield, whilst Lara Taylor was visibly gaining confidence alongside the very impressive Carmel Windsor Waite as the rock of the team’s defence.

A highly anticipated game against Dereham saw possibly the best of the performances, and a 2-0 win was just reward for all the girl’s hard work. Isobel Wolfe ran absolutely tirelessly whilst Lucy Morton continued her impressive exploits in front of goal. This was then followed by two very tough games against Norwich City A and Magpies A, which were lost 2-0 and 3-1. The game against City A was particularly notable for the saves that Alessandra Pellegrini made under heavy pressure.

The final game, against Watton, was much tougher than the team were initially expecting, but they rallied well to secure a 2-0 win via goals from Isobel Wolfe and Lucy Morton.

Overall the team finished a hugely impressive third, and perhaps even more importantly they finished with huge grins on their faces (despite the rain and the sheer exhaustion of the day). A genuine team effort and excellent contributions right across the piece.

Game 1 & 2 the defence couldn’t clear the ball so always under pressure – midfield very congested.

Game 3 onwards – James moved back to defence & alongside Blue we didn’t really look like conceding. Alex Lowry came back into midfield – played v well – a little terrier!

Game 3 we had 2 good chances & could have won.

Game 4 no real chances but equally our defence was solid.

Game 5 – one way traffic…Angus didn’t touch the ball in goal….& Joe, Gus & Alex picked up everything coming out of their defence – a mirror of the first two games.

Boys Under 12s

The first tournament of the season was the Magpies event and the squad of nine all turned up on time for a frostfree early start ready for the 9:30 pushback. There were eight teams, so a bit larger than last season’s tournaments, with both Magpies and Norwich fielding two teams.

In the first game against Dereham, Dragons were a bit disorganised to start off, with some poor marking allowing Dereham to take control of the game, but some solid defensive play by James and Huck supported by some fine clearances from Ben prevented Dereham from scoring. We had a few good breaks, and with Raunaq making a good run down the centre passed to Pedro near the back of the D, and he cleanly swept the ball into the goal; and it stayed at 1-0 for the rest of the match.

Norwich A were a strong side and Dragons who still not settled were struggling from the outset, and we found ourselves one down after less than a minute. Norwich continued to dominate throughout the match and if it hadn’t been for Ben making some impressive saves the final 0-5 score would have been considerably worse.

We were feeling more comfortable prior to the start of the Watton game, who were fielding quite a young team, and we were in their half for much of the match, with Louis making some good runs down the left wing, dribbling into the D to hit one of their feet and hence gaining us a short corner. A good injection to Edward who’s shot was inches outside the near post. A bit later Harry passed a couple of defenders, crossed to Pedro who rolled the ball out past a defender and a clean hit gave us a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later Raunaq picked up an excellent cross by Huck, dribbled by a defender and pushed the ball into the corner. With the team gaining composure, Raunaq scored another two before the final whistle – making it 4-0 and a hattrick by Raunaq.

We didn’t know what to expect from Magpies B (who were a similar standard to how w were two years ago), and we dominated from the start; capitalising on their inexperience we gained plenty of short corner practice, and Edward hit the backboard to make it 1-0. Lewis then made a good run down the left, into the D, dribbled neatly past a defender and pushed it past the goalkeeper. The next was a brilliant goal by Jonathan, who swept Raunaq’s cross into the goal.  A few seconds later Harry did a copy of Lewis’ goal from the opposite side; and before the final whistle, Raunaq, Edward and Jonathan had all scored another one to make it 7-0, with James and Ben getting a bit bored with not a lot to do in defence.

The Pelicans was a close game but goals by Raunaq and Pedro gave us a sufficient lead despite them getting one back before the final whistle.

With only one loss so far, we were feeling more confident and knew the game against Magpies A would be decisive. As expected there was plenty of action for the defence, and James did some great channelling work to obstruct their crosses entering our D.  Huck did some great block tackles and clearances out wide. Edward calmly V dragged past one of their attackers and made a great through ball to Harry who took the ball up and crossed to Pedro who made it one nil to Dragons. However, Magpies came back at us straight after the pushback and were in our D within a few seconds and Ben made a terrific diving save to prevent the equaliser.  More great saves by Ben, with some firm clearances by James, Edward and Huck, enabled us to get some minor attacking opportunities, but these were short-lived, and another onslaught by Magpies resulted in a one in one for Ben who rushed out to make a great diving save. The ball rebounded to the stick of another attacker, who with Ben down, saw his chance, and struck it just below knee height to the right hand corner, however, Jonathan put his defensive skills into action and made a brilliant stop, and  Harry, who had also rushed back, cleared it away to safety. So we were quite pleased when the final whistle went and the match ended with a 1-1 draw.

In the final game against Norwich B, we dominated from the opening pushback, and played some good hockey with close marking, and players finding and moving into spaces to pick up the clearances from James and Huck. Edward made some good runs into their D, and on one of these passed to Pedro, unmarked on the edge of the D to take it in to score with a fine hit into the middle of the goal. Harry then scored another great goal, which was followed by others from Pedro and Raunaq; and thus 4-0.

Final Result: RUNNERS UP – a great performance

13/10/12 – NDHC Match Reports & Hoof

Mens East League Division 2 North
Bury St Edmunds 1s 3:2 Norwich Dragons 1s

Taking a large squad and enjoying a good warm-up Dragons started the game confidently. Though they were able to move the ball around reasonably well, they were unable to create many chances up front. They were forced to concede a number of penalty corners relatively early on, but were able to defend these. However, it was Bury who opened the scoring, forcing the ball home from close range after a melee around the penalty spot. Dragons lifted their game in response and started to create some good attacks of their own. Dragons scored from their first penalty corner, Alex Browne smashing the ball home (1-1). The game remained evenly matched as the half continued. Bury always looked dangerous on the break and Dragons were able to work the corners well. Half time 1-1.

The second half continued much as the first half had finished with both sides creating opportunities but unable to find the net. Unfortunately for Dragons they turned the ball over on their own 23m line, Bury pouncing on this opportunity poured forward and scored with an excellent reverse stick shot (2-1 Bury). Dragons surged forward, enjoying most of the play, but were unable to take any of their opportunities in front of goal. This was compounded by their penalty corner routine not firing on all cylinders. Rather against the run of play Bury broke quickly and a strong cross from the right was met at the near post by their forward, his first time deflection flying into the Dragons’ net (3-1) Bury. Again Dragons pressed, with man of the match Steve Woodward inspirational in the attack. Eventually Jason Wolfe gather a loose ball in the Bury circle and calmly slotted the ball into the net (3-2 Bury). By now it was all Dragons, but despite a number of corners and opportunities they were not able to get the equaliser. Final score 3-2 Bury.

Dragons man of the match: Steve Woodward.

Mens East League Division 4 North East
Norwich Dragons 2s 2:0 IES 3s

The dragons played in a hard fought battle against a strong IES 3XI. Keeping true to form dragons struck in the first half from a short corner routine worked backed to push out boy Piers Gordon Brown who made no mistake about hitting the backboard from within a foot. The dragons kept there pressure high up in IES territory and allowed the ball to do the work. An unfortunate yellow for dragons player Rob Panter who plucked a delightful interception above head height and was duly dispatched to the corner. Dragons had to work hard with 10 leading to Jim Woodruff making some seismic saves from at the back to keep the Dragons 1 up at the break.

Much of the same from the dragons in the second half after getting back to full strength. Dicey passing and running keeping the pressure on the IES outfit. A second goal came in the midway in the half with Dan Cheesman snaked his way towards goal before rounding the keeper and coolly slipping the ball in. The game had a fiery end with two more cards; one for dragons captain for use of the arm while tackling close and a young IES player for dissent. In all a great result keeping dragons on a roll. 2-0 dragons with Jim Woodruff man of the match.

IES 4s 0:2 Norwich Dragons 3s

On a delightfully sunny morning, Norwich Dragons Men’s 3s embarked on a journey down the A140 to local rivals IES, with the aim of keeping their 100% record in tact for another week.

The game started well for the Dragons who saw the lion’s share of possession and with good interplay from John Ives down the right and Man of the Match Barney Price, Dragons created lots of chances but were unable to take them.  The sturdy defence, as reliable as ever, kept any threat from a young IES forward line at bay, with particularly good work being put in by Ben Dures at right back.

Rejuvenated after an encouraging half-time team talk, the Dragons continued to dominate both possession and chances.  The goals eventually came, courtesy of the forward pairing of Will Kirby and Adrian Kemp.  The former after a well worked short corner and the latter after a clinical break started by Jon Price in midfield.

Dragons welcome a strong Felixstowe team to the Den next week, which will prove a stern test of the progress they have made.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 6 North East
Norwich Dragons 4s 2:0 Sudbury 4s

Still on a high from the our initial success in spite of our defeat against Ipswich, the team started full of enthusiasm. Our initial attacks were well defended and we could not find a way through Sudbury’s defence. As the game went on Sudbury began to take some control. We were beginning to underestimate a team with a lot of experience and some energetic youngsters.

The Dragons soon realised that the breakdowns were coming through the middle of the park and tightened up the defence. Once this was in place we started to apply pressure. It was into the second half of the game when we got our first corner. This did not result in a goal but shortly after, Dave Thornton scored for close range. More pressure led to a feet on the line and a penalty to the Dragons. Unfortunately this was not converted. As Sudbury tired, Dragons pressure found Michael Whitmore collect the ball at the top of the D and his shot left the keeper with no chance. Great result at 2 – 0 to the Dragons.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Norwich Dragons 1s 2:0 North Walsham 1s

Dragons Ladies 1st team knew this was going to be the hardest tests of the season so far. Both teams went into this game unbeaten and the Dragons were keen to improve on last weeks disappointing performance.

The Dragons started with a high intensity and took the game to North Walsham playing some attractive attacking hockey and enjoying the majority of the possession. The North Walsham defence were definitely the busier but they showed great resilience and limited the home team to few goal scoring opportunities. North Walsham proved to be quick on the counter attack and it was the visitors who had the first clear cut chance when they broke through the Dragons defence with only Laura TUCK, the Dragons keeper, to beat. TUCK was quick off her line spotting the danger early and made a superb diving clearance at the top of the D sweeping the ball to safety. The Dragons continued to push forward and could feel that a goal was coming. After a series of short corners Emily ROLLS broke the deadlock with a superb strike which nestled right in the corner of the goal.

The second half was similar to the first. The Dragons maintained their discipline enjoying the greater of the possession and playing their usual passing game. The Dragons were patient as they went in search of the second goal and although they did look the more likely of the two teams to score North Walsham proved very dangerous on the counter attack as they had speed and ability in their forwards which kept the Dragons defence on their toes.

The Dragons were delighted to get a second, Emily ROLLS again with a fine finish from a short corner routine. The Dragons defence and TUCK were strong throughout keeping a clean sheet for the third consecutive week with the Dragons player of the match, Sarah BORRETT, having an excellent game at right defence.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Loddon 1s 0:2 Norwich Dragons 2s

Norwich Dragons Ladies 2’s started the game against Loddon brightly and dominated the early exchanges, with some good play down the left from Player of the Match Kerri White who linked up well with Debs Smith, who made a welcome return to the squad. Having forced a number of short corners, Dragons finally took advantage, with an excellent strike from Saskia Delacave.

Loddon always looked dangerous on the break, but Dragons kept their defensive shape well, with Alice Guest showing good composure in the centre of defence.

The second half saw further Dragons pressure, however the goal to secure the game continued to elude them, despite some strong attacking play most noteably through Laura Bailey.

Finally the goal to settle the game came mid-way through the second half, with Hannah Hardy pouncing onto a loose pass and squaring the ball for Saskia Delacave to score her second, and ensure the Dragons took all 3 points back to the Den.

Once again an excellent team effort from the Ladies 2’s who are starting to forge a great team spirit and play some really attractive hockey.

Magpies 5s 0:1 Norwich Dragons 3s

Norwich Dragons played some smart hockey in the first half, passing the ball in triangles around the opposition.  Magpies were pushed deep into their half, but they played a good defensive game.  Dragons persevered and had several attempts on goal including penalty corners.  Hazel Sumner, playing her debut as a forward, put Dragons ahead with a close range goal.

Magpies came out strong in the second half and looked a different team.  The game was much more evenly matched and Dragons defence were tested for the first time this season.  Magpies were quick to take free passes and kept the pace of the game up.  However, Dragons’ Sophie Thomas and Hazel Medlar put in some strong tackles on the left to defend Magpies attacks.

Despite attempts on goal from both teams, the score remained the same and Dragons held onto the 1 – 0 lead to win the match.  Louise Davis was Dragons’ Player of the Match.

Marshall Motor Group Norfolk Women’s League Division 2
Old Buckenham 2s 0:6 Norwich Dragons 4s

On a cool afternoon, with the sun trying to peak out, the 4s faced a serious chat by Captain Kate Atkins, telling us not to be complacent but to play our game the way we know we can.

These words were adhered to, with an instant surge towards goal on the whistle, the Dragons looking very threatening indeed.  Our first goal came a from penalty flick, nicely put away by Annika Richardson.  There was another goal before half time by Debbie Santa Clara, but not before an absolute scorcher of a hit by ‘Neeps’ (Lynne Price) that sadly hit the posts.

Our half-time talk was just as motivational as the pre-game talk, and the Dragons went back out on the pitch in high spirits.  Old Buckenham obviously had a good team talk too as they managed to get the ball in our D early in the 2nd half, winning a few short corners that they were unable to convert thanks to our steadfast defence.  The Dragons’ response: 4 more goals, by Scarlett Brown, Debbie and two for Annika.  It was a well deserved hat-trick for Annika, showing fighting spirit by attacking every ball that came her way with gusto.

Regular substitutions meant that both the offence and defence were kept fresh and the Dragons were able to keep their work-rate up throughout the game.

Man-of-the match went to Megan Harvey, who worked extremely hard down the right, being instrumental in bringing the ball into the D again and again, with notable mention of Catherine Bourassa and Scarlett the trio working very well together.  Overall, it was a very enjoyable match, and Old Buckenham were good sports and hosts.

Magpies 6s 7:0 Norwich Dragons 5s

For the second week running the 5s were given a hockey lesson by a faster, stronger, more determined team who wanted the ball more and knew what to do with it when they had it. The bright spots were the performance of Amy Forse in goal, who made strings of fine saves. Abi Cowe had another excellent game in the centre of the defence, and Sophie Farrow returned to run tirelessly upfront.
Dragons’ player of the match was Rosie Korn who was often able to boss the midfield.  The 5s did not allow their heads to drop; with a mix mainly of players returning to hockey and others who are making the transition from school hockey to women’s league they know they have a great deal of work to do on their core skills, their tactics and their ability to read the game befor they can make a serious impression on this division.

A well fought match against a strong Magpies side.A relatively poor first half ending at 5-0 because of some poor marking and too many stick tackles, however in the second half it was much better with Dragons conceding no goals from some great saves by Sam and some excellent tackles from Jonty.

So the result ended up 5-0 to Magpies.Well done to Jonty Gosling for getting man of the match. Thanks to the adult players/coaches Cley Hamilton, Lawrence Singleton, Mark Flatman and Ben Harvey. Also thanks to the umpires Mike Banham and Michael Whitmore.Match report by Ben Watson who was captain for the game.

Never seen a Dragon with a Hoof?  Well, this is him and his name is Qilin.  According to Wikipedia, although he looks fearsome, the Qilin only punishes the wicked (our Opposition). It can walk on grass (astro turf) yet not trample the blades, and it can also walk on water (when playing at Harleston).  As it is a peaceful creature, its diet does not include flesh (only Kate’s Mum’s cheese sandwiches).  It takes great care when it walks never to harm or tread on any living thing (no treading on Young Dragons), and it is said to appear only in areas ruled by a wise and benevolent leader (can’t be referring to our President, can it?).  It is normally gentle but can become fierce if a pure person (NDHC Member) is threatened by a sinner (Opposition Player), spouting flames from its mouth and exercising other fearsome powers (Yellow Cards).

Talking of cards, Rich and Louise, organisers of the Dragon’s Hoof League Table have made an executive decision, not to include cards and to revert to the original proposal, that they know has worked for many years at Woking HC.  Obtaining data about cards would be onerous, untimely and unreliable.  Cards will make a big difference to scores and therefore if mistakes are made this could end up being rather unfair and contentious.  Whilst as a Club we do not condone cards, and take action against any yellow card for dissent or persistent yellow cards, it is not felt that The Dragon’s Hoof competition is the vehicle for penalising offenders.

Just to finish the Dragon and Chinese discussion, did you know that this year is the Chinese Year of the Dragon?  Let’s prove that on the pitch with our results 🙂

06/10/12 – NDHC Match Reports

Mens East League Division 2 North
Norwich Dragons 1s 4:4 Cambridge City 3s

After a couple of reverses on the road in previous weeks Dragons wanted to get back to winning ways at the Dragons’ Den. Cambridge had the better of the early exchanges, though Dragons were playing at a better pace and intensity than previous weeks. Cambridge scored first, after a quickly taken free hit, overloading the Dragons defence. Dragons were soon back into the game when Matt Knights followed up a penalty corner with a low reverse stick sweep after picking up the rebound (1-1). Dragons scored a second through Ed Smith, picking up the rebound from a penalty corner and slapping home from close range. Half-time 2-1 Dragons.

The game continued to be well matched in the second half. Cambridge scored first, shooting home from close range (2-2). Dragons restored their lead through Matt Knights who, on receiving a long pass calmly rounded the keeper and scored into an open net (3-2 Dragons). Though Dragons cleared one Cambridge penalty corner off the line, they were not able to keep out a well executed drag-flick which went high between the keeper and post man (3-3). With the game looking to be heading for a draw Cambridge scored their 4th with 5 minutes to go: their initial shot was well saved by Robbie Whiting in goal, but Cambridge were first to the rebound and flicked the ball into the roof of the Dragons net (4-3). However, Dragons rallied strongly and after good approach play down the left Matt Knights completed his hat trick, volleying the ball into the Cambridge net at the far post. Final score 4-4.

Dragons man of the match was Matt Knights.

Watton 1s 1:3 Norwich Dragons 2s

Norwich Dragons Men’s 2s started their game with a flurry against a strong Watton side. Having all of the possession they played fast attacking hockey and were bearing down on goal for the majority of the first half.  After a series of short corners Dragons finally struck when Dan Cheesman fired home a delightful reverse stick undercut. The second came shortly after an Andy Kelsall shot from the top of the D caught a deflection off an opponent. The high work rate pushing forward cost the Dragons, as a goal was conceded late in the first half, Watton won a couple of scrappy free hits, before the ball was bundled in to make it 2-1 at the break.

The Dragons came out flying in the second half buoyed by the team talk. Managing to contain yet more possession and fast attacking that proved too much for Watton as Ricky Powley fired in from close range to seal the win. Final score 3-1 with man of the match Mark Flatman.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 5NE
Norwich Dragons 3s 2:1 Lowestoft Railway 2s

On a bright and early Saturday morning Lowestoft Railway faced a slightly altered Dragons team. With the majority of the possession in the first half Dragons saw their early domination of possession lead to a number of chances. Excellent link up play between young prospects Will Ives and Ben Campbell lead to a couple of bet tricky chances flashing past the Railway goal.
In the second half Dragons continued to play their usual passing game and Railway came out of the blocks quickly too, with particularly good play from their younger players. This resulted in the opening goal of the game after a goo break down the left flank.
Not to be deterred, the Dragons persisted with their game plan, creating many more Chances. The dogged persistence of Will Kirby resulted in the equaliser for Dragons, scored by Ben Campbell with a cool finish under pressure from a defender and he railway keeper. Further possession for he Dragons and the support of Dragons Ladies, lead to skipper George Walker getting the winner from an interesting manoeuvre at the top of the D, that some might cruelly say looked suspiciously like a topped shot.

With only a slightly weaker side than normal, Dragons absorbed enormous pressure in the first 10-15 minutes to hold a very well organised Ipswich team and give them probably their toughest test in the league so far.  Despite the pressure Dragons became equal to their opponents and caused Ipswich problems when attacking, this subsequently paid off as Dragons took the lead through a Mike Banham short corner.

Ipswich came back however, with Dragons again holding firm at the back but they equalised through some crisp play, this was followed by 2 more quick goals as Ipswich started to show why they are top of the league. Not to be put back Dragons got themselves back in the game before half time, again through Mike Banham converting another short corner.  Half time was 3-2, with all to play for.

Dragons came out in the second half determined to equalise and played well but just couldn’t put enough pressure on the Ipswich goal, short corners came but could not be converted.

Ipswich were held again for a large period in the second half, but began to breakdown the Dragons defence as they sensed more glory.  By now Dragons were playing to prevent conceding any further goals.

Despite the high work rate Ipswich proved to strong and rounded off the game with 3 further goals, which probably flattered the final score line.  Chris Millar was on fine form pulling off a number of vital saves to prevent the score being any higher, which rightfully earned him Man of the Match.

Dragons will take heart from some very strong work rate and positive attitude which will not doubt mean they will be able to see off other opposition in the league with performances like this.

Panthers 1s 0:1 Norwich Dragons 1s

Dragons Ladies 1st team struggled to find their recent good form and only just managed to maintain their unbeaten run by a 1-0 victory over a very determined and relentless Panthers Team.

It was the home side that dominated the first half and certainly unsettled the Dragons who found it difficult to get a foothold in the game. In the first half the Panthers work rate was definitely the greater of the two teams and their game plan was proving to be successful with the Dragons being unable to break down the Panthers defence. There were few goalscoring opportunities for the Dragons and those that they did have were confidently cleared by the Panthers keeper who was in great form.

After the break the Dragons began to find their rhythm playing some attractive hockey and they began to boss the game enjoying the greater of the possession and increasing the pressure on the Panthers defence.  The Dragons had a number of penalty corners resulting in good efforts on goal but the Panthers keeper seemed unbeatable on the day making several class clearances. The Dragons persistence and discipline paid off after 20 minutes when they finally broke the deadlock. A well rehearsed penalty corner routine was cleverly finished off by in form Laura SHREEVE who saw her effort loop over the Panthers keeper into the corner of the net.

To the Panthers credit they maintained their dogged determination throughout the match limiting goal scoring opportunities for the Dragons and, to the Dragons credit, although they found this a frustrating game the team stuck together, maintained their discipline and grounded out a win.

Norwich Dragons 2s 9:0 Old Buckenham 1s

Dragon’s started the game brightly, scoring two goals early on to settle the nerves, through Hannah Hardy and Ruth Wilmott. Dragons Ladies 2’s confidence grew, and they started to move the ball around the pitch effortlessly, scoring another 3 before the half-time break. Player of the match, Ruth Wilmott secured a first half hat trick, with Klara Moolman adding her first goal for the 2nd Team.
At halftime, Coach Pete Thomas asked the team to go out and continue the scoring. The Dragons reacted well, continuing to move the ball smartly through the midfield, with good work from Lucy Hopgood and Kerri White. The Dragons defence remained solid, against an Old Buckenham team who never stopped working hard, which was a credit to them.
Further goals in the second half scored by Klara Moolman, Ruth Wilmott, Laura Bailey (first goal for the Club) and Niamh Lowe-Davies (first goal for the Ladies 2’s).
A strong team performance and lots to build on for this newly formed team.

Norwich Dragons 3s 3:0 Evergreens 2s

Norwich Dragons were dominant throughout the game, however goals were not easy to come by.  The first came from a penalty corner, which Caroline Wolfe slipped left to Amy Brown to convert.  Evergreens’ goalie played superbly throughout; saving repeated shots on goal from all angles, during open play and from penalty corners.  Dragons continued to attempt to drive straight into the Evergreens’ ‘D’ only to be met by defense. So the half time score of 1 – 0 did not really reflect the amount of possession Dragons had enjoyed.
Both teams started the second half with more determination and there was a period play when the ball was moved up and down the pitch.  However, Dragon’s goalie was never tested.  Dragons always looked in control passing the ball around but did not use it as effectively as they should.  The second goal only came by chance when a slow miss hit ball from Caroline Wolfe seemed to roll in slow motion into the Evergreens goal.  In contrast, the final goal was textbook style with Amy Brown outmanoeuvring the Evergreens’ keeper by passing to the right hand post for Amelia Dawson to finish the move.
Dragons did not play their best hockey but deserved the win.  Dragons’ player of the match was Olivia Thomas.

Herlings 5:0 Norwich Dragons 5s

This one and only game on grass was a good one for the 5s to get out of the way. They had a plan to counter the hard-hitting Herlings, and it worked well in the first half when Herlings had the advantage of the slope  but only managed to score once, thanks to Amy Forse being in fine form in goal. Unfortunately, in the second half the Dragons just ran out of steam, and with Herlings determined to get to the ball first, they were rewarded with regular opportunities to score. Abi Cowe got the player of the match vote for her bravery and determination going in for the ball and turning defence into attack, and her fellow defenders Emma Buxton and Beth Elgood also played well. Holly Francis, the club’s great utility player, held the midfield together and relieved a lot of pressure. Fran Clabon brought energy and determination to her debut performance on the left; Kate Goodrum was undaunted by close marking and pressure; Cath Power and Claire Fairhurst also gave their best on their first league game. Ideally, Dragons would not have given debuts to players in this particular game, but on a week where all the other teams needed to call players up, then the 5s know they did their bit for the club by making their players available. They also have a clear view of what they need to concentrate on in training – it’s back to the core skills of passing accurately, passing early, going to the ball. There are times in hockey when the ability to hit the ball hard is useful, but the 5s do not need to over-focus on that. Accuracy will do.

Dereham 1:4 Norwich Dragons

It was a nice sunny day at Dereham and we were unexpectedly pleased to see the arrival of Edward and Henry, which meant that we were only one man short. Each team fielded two adults, and the first twenty minutes was an evenly played, mainly midfield match, with both sides making some good attacking moves. Despite some clean passing between Ben, Connor and Henry we were unable to penetrate into their D.

Dereham pushed up hard, however there was some excellent channelling by Robert and Edward (playing his debut) and some timely block tackles and clearances by Andy. The pressure at times was too much to prevent them shooting, and Sam made a series of brilliant saves, including two shots from short corners, and came out very quickly to block a shot when one of their forwards broke through our defence to a one on one position.

It was 0-0 at half time; and we decided to have a bit more attacking format – though in the first few minutes we were on the defence and Dereham made a good run with some quick short passing and Sam, now with the sun in his eyes, was unable to stop a great hit in the right hand corner.  The Dragons kept persevering with Ben making some great passes for Connor and Henry to push forward; and on one occasion to Henry who then dribbled down the right wing beating four players and followed by a powerful cross, which was deflected by a Dereham defender into their goal to make it one all.

This gave the team sufficient encouragement to more readily pass the Dereham adults and a good ball by Pedro to Ben who had the pace to pass another defender and a clean strike to make it 2:1.

Five minutes later and Ben made another run down the right wing to cross the ball to Robert, who had found space a few metres off the far post and swept the cross into the left hand corner.

From a 16 yard hit Edward made a fine pass to Pedro who made a good through pass to Henry who dribbled past a couple of defenders and made a cracking shot into the top right corner – however he was fractionally outside the D. The second half was not all attacking and Andy, Robert and Edward proved solid in defence, with Sam making another couple of fine blocks. In the last minute of the game a great run by Ben and Henry, ended with another fine strike by Ben from the edge of the D to make the final score 4:1.

A great result and a well deserved win.

Mens East League Division 2 North
Ipswich and East Suffolk 1s 4:2 Norwich Dragons 1s

Dragons travelled to newly promoted Ipswich and East Suffolk, hoping to bounce back from the disappointing defeat to Pelicans the week before. However, they found themselves 2 nil down in the first five minutes. Ipswich’s high press lead to a turn over from which they scored and then a second turn over from which they won a penalty corner: Wagstaff on the line was only able to parry the shot into to the net. Dragons struggled to find any fluency in the first half and conceded a 3rd goal making it 3-0 to Ipswich. Dragons finally managed to play to their potential in the final 15 minutes of the half and Sam Parmenter took 2 well taken goals making the half-time score 3-2 to Ipswich and East Suffolk.

Dragons continued to play well in the second half, enjoying much more of the possession and started to create a number of opportunities. The went close when Matt Knights’ pass didn’t quite complete to Snelling as they bore down on the goal keeper. Midway through the half the game was brought to a halt when Chris Simmonds was struck in the top lip by the ball. This resulted in a trip to A&E for him and some stitches; many thanks to the spectator who took him to hospital. This did not disrupt Dragons who continued to look for the equaliser. They managed to win a number of penalty corners, but were unable to beat the Ipswich keeper. By this time it was nearly all Dragons and Matt Knights went close, seeing his deflection just creep over the cross bar. Dragons then lost their captain, Danny Knights, having taken a penalty corner strike directly onto his foot as he ran out. As time began to run out Dragons were caught on the break, Ipswich tapping in at the far post to make the score 4-2 to Ipswich and East Suffolk. This left too much for Dragons to do, final score 4-2 to Ipswich.

Dragons man of the match was Sam Parmenter.

Mens East League Division 4 North East
Norwich Dragons 2s 4:0 Felixstowe 2s

The Dragons 2s cruised to their 3rd win of the season on their first outing at the Dragons’ Den. A game that was dominated from the off, with the home team playing positive attacking hockey, all in Felixstowe’s territory. Competing with the strict structure and precise passing from the Dragons was a tough task for the away team. It didn’t take long before the opposition’s goal was breached after persistent Dragon pressure. Dan Cheesman’s undercut throwing the keeper completely, to allow the ball to grace the inside of the goal and in the process nearly taking team-mate Piers Gordon-Brown out; if it wasn’t for a swift duck. This was shortly followed up by Mark Flatman slapping in a short corner breakdown at the top of the circle. Ricky Powley was making his presence known by firing several efforts at the goal making the Felixstowe keeper work hard to keep the score at 2-0 going into the interval.

Dragons started the second half as they had done the first, maintaining their positive attacking pressure and structure. The home side’s defence had slightly more to deal with in the half as Felixstowe tried to catch the Dragons on the break, only to be quelled by the inspiring unit at the back. Further attacking pressure lead to more opportunities upfront with Dan Cheesman squandering a couple of chances before slotting home from close range and then finishing off his hat trick with a coolly taken effort, giving the Dragons a 4-0 victory.

Man of the Match: Dan Cheesman.

UEA 4s 0:2 Norwich Dragons 3s
Dragons Scorers: Will Kirby and George Walker.

Dragons Mens 3rd team started this match positively and soon had the young students on the back foot. The pressure soon resulted in the team being awarded a short corner which was capitalised on when Will Kirby’s effort from the top of the D arrowed into the bottom corner of the goal to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Attacks continued to be created and some good saves from the UEA keeper ensured his team remained in the match. Peter Davison was having a commanding performance at sweeper for the Dragons and also acting as a support for the Dragons midfield and would be duly rewarded after the match by being nominated as player of the match. The half ended 1-0 with UEA failing to trouble the Dragons keeper.

Early in the second half the Dragons increased their lead when a good cross from Will Kirby enabled George Walker to score a rare open play goal. This two goal cushion helped to ease any anxiety in the Dragons players minds. The Dragons continued to create chances and win short corners but continued good play by the UEA keeper ensured they could not score the goals that would have reflected the dominance of their performance.

A good performance playing at times in both defence and midfield was witnessed from Jon Goodson.

Bury St Edmunds 4s travelled to the Dragons’ Den with only 10 men, despite this they put up a valiant effort. The visitors scored 2 goals in quick succession with fast runs through the middle. Dragons pulled 2 back to reach the halfway stage all square.  Bury scored another early in the second half but with no subs they were eventually overcome by Dragons dogged persistence who finished stronger and finished the game 4-3 victors. Dragons scorers: Dave Thornton, Henry Laming, Paul Keating and Michael Whitmore with Henry Laming just pipping Rob Jenkins to the Player of the Match, thanks to his top of the corner reverse stick strike.

Norwich Dragons 1s 8:0 Ipswich & East Suffolk 1s

Dragons Ladies 1st team played host to IES on Saturday and romped to a convincing victory.

The home side started with a high tempo immediately testing the IES defence before Dragons Captain Marie JAMES opened the scoring with a diving effort diverting a cross beyond the keepers reach. The second was soon to follow; some excellent work by Laura SHREEVE allowed Shelly SEAMAN to open her account for the season. The Dragons got a third before half time this time SEAMAN the provider for SHREEVE to neatly slot home from close range.

Having leaked goals in the first two matches of the season and allowing teams back in the game the Dragons were determined to keep a clean sheet and to their credit the defensive back four maintained their discipline and controlled the game giving the team a strong platform to build their attacks.

The home side continued to push forward dominating the game and hungry for more goals. The youngest Dragon Lizzie CHEESMAN started the scoring in the second half smartly deflecting a cross which gave the keeper no chance. The fifth was as a result of a good run by CHEESMAN dribbling past the IES defence before sliding the ball through for SHREEVE who neatly slotted the ball past the keeper. After wave after wave of attacks player of the match CHEESMAN scored a second. SHREEVE full of confidence now was rewarded for her endless running by scoring another two goals and completing her hat- trick for the second consecutive week.

Panthers 1s 1:1 Norwich Dragons 2s

Dragons travelled to sunny Sheringham with a changed team, due to unavailability. After a slow start, not helped by a sloppy warm-up, Dragons gradually got into the game, forcing a number of short corners. Despite good efforts from Claire Baker and Sophie Cullens, Dragons couldn’t get past a Panthers GK on top form.

Panthers had a spell of pressure, but were thwarted by some solid defending, most notably from Sarah Wagstaff and Player of the Match, Maddie Denman. Panthers scored from a smartly taken short corner.

Not to be down hearted Dragons continued to battle, and finally beat the Panthers keeper following a broken down short corner, smartly tucked away by Claire Baker.

The second half saw Dragons continue to put pressure, with some good work by Klara Moolman and Niamh Lowe Davies, however they couldn’t turn this pressure into goals. Amy Forse was required to make a couple of smart clearances near the end of the game, to keep the score at 1-1. Plenty to build on for the Dragons.

Dragons came out strong from the start and scored within the opening five minutes. A powerful cross from the right by Caroline Wolfe was skillfully picked up by Pollyanna Watson, who placed the ball neatly in the net.

The second came soon after when a broken down penalty corner was pushed home by Wolfe.

Two more came before the halftime break; Amy Brown scored during free play then Flora Gregorie successfully beat the Dereham keeper one-on-one.

Dragons continued their dominance in the second half, with further goals from Gregorie, Wolfe, and Watson, who completed her hat trick. This earned her player of the match.

Norwich Dragons 4s looked to continue their 100% record and did so in emphatic style. Led well by captain Kate Atkins the Dragons dominated possession but were unable to break through the City defence until the dying seconds of the first half when Holly Francis deservedly put the Dragons ahead.

The second half saw Dragons continue the on slaught. Again credit to the City defense who were proving to be very strong. However after lots of possession and patience Dragons were rewarded when Lynne Price put the Dragons 2.0 up. A further 2 goals by Debbie Santa Clara and a cracking shot by Megan Harvey saw the Dragons end the match with a well deserved 4.0 victory and another clean sheet.

Player of the match Catherine Bourassa worked tirelessly as did the entire team. Great effort ladies.

Breckland 0:3 Norwich Dragons 5s

Dragons enjoyed a comfortable win over a weakened Breckland side, who put their strongest outfield player in goal in order to keep the score to a respectable level. She performed heroics, and her fellow defenders bravely withstood a barrage of shots from the Dragons.

However, it was the young Dragons’ players who caught the eye, with Izzy Woodcock making her debut at senior level and opening the scoring. Marcy Windsor-Waite, a product of the Development League Team, was player of the match for some determined runs down the right. She scored an excellent goal by cutting into the circle and lifting the ball through a maze of players. Rosie Korn completed the scoring, picking a ball out of midfield and powering through.

Abi Cowe had an excellent game in the centre of the defence, and ensured Breckland only had occasional forays over the halfway line.  Emma and Katie Buxton have continued to improve their core skills and will not look back this season. Ciara Wilmott and Chiara Bond also look very comfortable at his level, and Beth Elgood and Lisa Harwood enjoyed their Dragons’ debut. Lois McGregor, Laura Goodbun and Bridget Le Good also showed sufficient form to make the point that even at 5s level, Dragons have a strong squad and competition for places this season will be strong. Regular attendance at training is essential; the senior players in particular must look to take responsibility for the fitness levels. The players also need to work on their ‘first touch’ and early decisions.

East Hockey League Division 2 North
Pelicans Mens 1s 3:1 Norwich Dragons Mens 1s

Dragons put in their poorest performance so far of the season, losing 3-1 away to Pelicans. Dragons had high hopes of building on their 7-0 win from the previous week but struggled to come to terms with the pitch and the pace of the game. Despite being on the back foot for the first 10 minutes of the game, Dragons were unlucky when their first penalty corner strike was deflected into the roof of the net by a defender, but was then disallowed by the umpire. Dragons continued to defend for much of the half, conceeding a number of corners. It was from one of these corners that Pelicans scored with a well taken drag flick, low to the keepers left. Pelicans scored their second from a broken down corner, the follow-up strike being deflected by the closing defender past the goalkeeper into the roof of the net. Half-time score 2-0 to Pelicans.

After a strong team talk at half-time Dragons picked up the pace of their game and started to pose more of a threat to the Pelicans defence as well as reducing their attacking opportunities. Dragons pulled a goal back when Garnett Jones’ forceful cross was deflected by a Pelicans defender into his own net (2-1 Pelicans). Dragons continued to push forward looking for the equaliser; the Pelicans keeper pulling off a fine save, deflecting Rupert Snelling’s drag flicked corner onto the post. Dragons were finally undone when a long pass from Pelicans into the Dragons’ defending circle was deflected by a defender into his own net.

Dragons man of the match was Robbie Whiting.

Final score 3-1 to Pelicans.

Thetford Town 1s 0:2 Norwich Dragons 2s

Norwich Dragons Men’s 2nd XI had a very strong first half, with swift passing and a disciplined structure.  The early pressure resulted in the opposition giving away a series of short corners, however the first goal came from Andy Kelsall who managed to find the back of the net with a first time shot from a crossed ball.  Dragons continued to surge forward with an attacking formation and were awarded a penalty flick late in the first half, duly converted by the experienced Ricky Powley.

The second half brought more of the same pressure from Dragons in Thetford’s half but to no avail needing Damien Ives to pull off some great saves when needed.  The visitors became frustrated that they couldn’t extend their lead and received two yellow cards for misdemeanours, however they managed to hold to their two goal lead to claim all three points.  Neil Shorten received his second consecutive player of the match award for a very solid performance at the back.

Norwich Dragons 3s 5:0 Harleston Magpies 7s

Dragons Scorers: Adrian Kemp X2,Matt Jenkins,John Ives,Will Kirby.

Dragons 3rd Team played their first match in Division 5NE after last season’s championship winning season. On a glorious Autumn Day against an under strength opposition the Dragons started slowly and couldn’t get their normal passing game working.

The Dragons were woken into life by a Magpies short corner which hit the outside of the post and bounced safely behind. The breakthrough finally came when the ball was moved out of defence and switched to the right before the ball was crossed into the D for Matt Jenkins to score his first goal for the team from close range. The half finished with Dragons leading 1-0.

A half-time team talk stressed the importance of composure and calmness. This was swiftly put into practise with the ball being played to the flanks and taken to the baseline before being cut back for the forwards to have time to shoot. Goals were scored by John Ives with a bouncing shot and by Will Kirby and a double from Adrian Kemp. The Dragons defence was untroubled in the second half dealing well with any danger.

A good performance by young Will Ives on both wings using his pace to good effect deservedly earned him the player of the match award.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 6 North East
Norfolk Nomads 1s 1:6 Norwich Dragons 4s

Nomads started the game with 10 players and Dragons dictated the pace with some good passing, building up to attacks on goal. However, Nomads tried to turn this around with some fast passing and runs at Dragons defence which led Dragons to lose their shape.
Nomads went down to 9 in the second half after one of their players received a yellow card for dissent and decided not to return! Nomad’s heads went down and there followed many attacks on their goal resulting in goals from Dave Thornton (x2), Andy Key, Chris Harrison, Michael Whitmore and Rob Jenkins.
The goal tally should probably have been much higher but Dragons lacked the fire in their bellies and accuracy in shooting. Still Dragons passing game was superior to the opposition and they enjoyed the majority of possession. Rob Jenkins was particularly strong in midfield.  Ben Campbell was Dragons’ man of the match. He was excellent down the right-hand side beating defenders with pace and creating numerous chances.

Norwich Dragons 1s 4:2 Norwich Dragons 2s

Dragons 1st team started the game at a very high pace, passing the ball around effortlessly forcing an early goal through 1st Team Player of the Match Laura Sheeve. Whilst the 2s worked extremely hard, particularly in defence, Dragons 1s were clinical, with a goal set up by Gail Thomas, finished coolly by Natalie Beal, and another from Laura Shreeve, to make it 3-0 at halftime.

Dragons 2s started the 2nd half extremely positively, playing some great hockey and putting the 1s under pressure. Excellent work from Ally Windsor-Waite on the right, Sarah Wagstaff and Alice Guest in the centre of defence, and some tireless running from 2nd team debutant Klara Moolman, saw the 2s force a couple of short corners, which were both well dispatched by Saskia Delacave, to bring the game back to 3-2.

At this point the game could have gone either way, with Dragons 2s continuing to pressure the 1s defence.  Eventually, the 1st team sealed the game, with Laura Shreeve completing her hat trick with a smart finish, to conclude the scoring at 4-2.
Both teams should take credit from the way they played the game.

Norwich Dragons 3s 4:0 Broadland 2s

Despite the Dragons dominating the play, the score at half time was 0:0 due to Broadland’s solid defence and sharp goal keeping.

The second half saw the homeside change tactics and instead of trying to drive through the Broadland defence, they played more of a possession game.  After several penalty corners, the stalemate was finally broken by Amy Brown converting one from a pass slipped left to her.  This boosted Dragon’s confidence and a second penalty corner saw Caroline Wolfe and Amelia Dawson play a one two move at the top of the ‘D’ with Wolfe putting the ball in the back of the net.

The next Dragon’s goal came from open play, with Isi Christophers sweeping a ball into the ‘D’ for Amy Brown to add her name to the scoresheet a second time.  The final goal came from a Caroline Wolfe straight strike from another penalty corner.

Dragons’ player of the match was Amy Brown, who not only scored two key goals but also showed good movement on and off the ball and supporting team play.

Norwich Dragons 4s 6:0 Norwich Dragons 5s

What a great start to the season for the Dragons 4s, though it felt a bit strange playing against fellow Dragons, with a 5th team being established this year.

While being a new team, the Dragon’s 5s certainly made a strong start, keeping the 4s on their toes. After the first ten minutes the 4s settled down and began to make some lovely passes and the goals soon began to appear. Lynne Price kept the team working together and also scored the first goal. This was soon followed by Lucy Campbell making a fantastic sweep in the D which slipped past the goalies feet.

Dragons 5s had some good breaks in the play with some excellent runs down the left side which resulted in 2 short corners; their player of the match was Jihanna Bonilla-Allard, who fought furiously for every ball on her debut.  There were excellent saves by both keepers, notably Sue Cullum who saved a lifted ball and the score at half time was 3:0.

The second half saw a cracking goal from a short corner by Sue Cross, Catherine Bourassa continued to be strong on the right, driving the ball, before making some excellent crosses into the D which were received by new member Scarlett Brown (4s player of the match) who is definitely a most welcome asset to the team, scoring 3 of our goals. Although she did not see much action Karolina Blažytė made some excellent saves in goal to keep the oppositions score down. Overall the Dragons worked well as a team and are looking forward to the rest of the season.

Marshall Motor Group Norfolk Girl’s Development League
Watton 1:1 Norwich Dragons

Dragons started the game well with Aoife Lowe-Davies moving the ball quickly up the pitch and they soon had the game under control. Not long after, Harriet Bracey took the ball up the pitch and hit it into the goal. The game stayed pretty even for the rest of that half. Only letting the ball slip a couple of times. Half time score 1-0 Dragons.

During the second half Dragons still had control but Watton got through and scored with about 5 minutes left of playing time.

Jess Tye Leech did a great job helping the team by playing in goal and the 1st Team Ladies Team players of Emily Rolls and Marie James were great with the girls, who learnt a lot from them.

The game ended with a 1-1 draw, but was played in a great atmosphere and in the spirit of how the development league should be played, so well done to both teams.

Player of the Match was Aoife Lowe-Davies.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 2 North
Norwich Dragons 1s 7 : 0 UEA 1s

With a new lineup for this season, Dragons started slowly in their opening league game. UEA enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening minutes of the game, but were unable to create any chances to trouble the Dragons keeper. After the opening 10 minutes Dragons started to play their way into the game, enjoying more of the ball. Robert Wagstaff opened the scoring with a dipping penalty corner strike (1-0 Dragons). This seemed to settle Dragons who established their passing game, creating a number of chances in front of goal and pressing the UEA defence. However, Dragons still needed a good save from Jim Woodruff to keep the score at 1-0. Steve Woodward made it 2-0 to Dragons, sweeping in a pass from the marauding Ali Smyth. Smyth continued to enjoy attacking into the space afforded him and made it 3-0, finishing from close in on goal. Following in on Sam Parmenter’s fierce strike, Rupert Snelling made the score 4-0. Garnett Jones finished the half off for Dragons, smashing the ball into the back of the net from the top of the circle. Half -time score 5-0 Dragons.

In the second half Dragons surged forward looking for more goals. Though they were able to contain the UEA attacks, they were unable to play with the same fluency of the first half. Rupert Snelling scored his second goal following up from Matt Knight’s shot which had hit the post (6-0 Dragons). Matt Knights finally got just reward for his tireless work, scoring at the far post.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Norwich Dragons 1s 3 : 2 Broadland 1s

Dragons Ladies 1st team visited Broadland for their opening game of the season.

The home side started the better of the two teams threatening the Dragons goalmouth before the visitors had time to settle. As the Dragons grew into the game it was them who took the early lead by some good work by the Dragons youngest player Lizzie CHEESEMAN which led to the first short corner of the game being awarded. Player of the match, Shelly SEAMAN, slipped the ball through to Marie JAMES who placed it in the corner beyond the goalkeepers reach.

As the Dragons pushed forward looking for a second goal Broadland worked hard to win possession and on the counter attack levelled the match from some neat hockey. The Dragons retaliated immediately regaining the lead; Laura SHREEVE playing an accurate through ball to Marie JAMES who struck the ball from the top of the circle into the left hand corner of the goal. As the half wore on Dragons began to dominate and scored a third through Debs SMITH striking the ball sweetly from the top of the circle past the Broadland keeper. It was Broadland who retaliated on this occasion pulling a goal back and reducing the deficit to 2-3.

The second half was evenly contested but proved goalless. Broadland worked tirelessly to get something from the game. There was some entertaining end to end hockey for the neutral supports with both teams having opportunities to score but it was the visitors who managed to hold on taking all three points.

East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Norwich Dragons 2s 0 : 4 Yarmouth 1s

A newly formed Norwich Dragons 2’s saw much of the possession in this Div 2NE league opener, but lacked the ‘killer instinct’ in the final quarter.

Dragons went a goal down early, to a deflected short corner strike. Player of the Match Maddie Denman, gave a typically tenacious performance at left defender, despite strong Yarmouth pressure. Before the break, Yarmouth scored a second, however Dragons kept battling through Ruth Wilmott and Lucy Hopgood, linking up well in midfield.

The 2nd half saw Dragons concede a sloppy goal early on, but to their credit, Dragons kept trying to play the right way with Ally Windsor-Waite and Laura Bailey playing some good hockey on the right. A fourth for Yarmouth, a penalty flick almost saved by Freddie Briscoe, saw Yarmouth secure 3 points.

Dragons need to continue to work hard and play their quicker passing hockey game; their rewards will come.

East Men’s Hockey League Division 6 North East
Norwich Dragons 4s 3 : 2 Dereham 5s

Dragons started the game very strongly, with good runs down the wings and through the middle with some excellent breaks into the D.

The Home Team kept applying the pressure to the Dereham defence which eventually paid off.  Henry Laming fired a cross in from outside the D, which was deflected into the goal from a Dereham stick.  Under the new ‘own goal’ rule that put Dragons 1-0 up.

Dragons were soon two goals to the good thanks to a Mike Banham short corner, which was slotted past the keeper from a rebound to put Dragons 2 goals ahead.

As expected, the second half was a bit tougher with Dereham mounting solid attacks that led to a penalty flick being powerfully converted, giving Chris Millar no chance.

Dragons did not let their heads drop and had continued to build up play from the defence working through midfield to take control of the game.  Following a good passage of play, the high speed Dave Thornton showed he also has the skill to deceive the keeper and popped the ball in the net to make it 3-1 to the home side.

Dereham managed to convert a short corner to make the final score 3 -2.

Dragons Hoof Intra Club League
As decided at the AGM this season will see us running an intra club competition/fun regardless of the level each team plays at and also an additional incentive on Saturday over and above the actual fixture.

Since the Hoof includes friendlies as well as leagues, results from Saturday 8th September have already been taken into account. The only information that we do not have is if players are carded so we will need to rely on captains passing on this information. Hopefully cards will be an exception…ahem!

It is run as a league table for all the teams in the club (including the dev teams). Points are awarded as follows:

3 points for a win
1 point for a draw
1 point for a clean sheet
1 point for every 3 goals the team scores in a game

The league table positions are based on a team’s game average (e.g. total number of points / number of games)
Games included are friendlies and league games played between Saturday 8th September 2012 and the Awards Night.
Games not included are tournaments or those outside of the allotted season or those conceded by either team.
It was also decided to take into account Green (-1) Yellow (-5) and Red (-10) cards by deducting points

Fixture Changes

As a result of some late decisions regarding fixtures, the Fixture Book is not 100% accurate and below are those fixtures that need to be changed or updated in your books.  The website reflects the correct fixtures.

Successful Development Team Tournament at Den

The girls and boys development teams each had friendly tournaments today at the Den hosting teams from Dereham and Magpies. Despite the heat, there was some very good hockey on show.  The Dragon girls drew 1 and lost 3 (suffering a bit with the heat) and the boys won 3 and drew 1.  Well done to Nat for organising and thanks to Tabba, Sarah W, Ali S, David P, Pat G, Jon P and Hazel M for their help in various ways on the day.

Ladies 2s Friendly Cancelled

Unfortunately Sprowston Ladies were not able to muster a team for the planned friendly on Monday 10th September against our Ladies 2s, so we have reluctantly had to cancel after failing to get alternative opposition at short notice.  The Ladies 1s will be playing their friendly against Norwich City at 8.15pm.

Join In Local Sport Initiative sees Cabinet Minister at the Den

NDHC has signed up to Join In Local Sport, a free, national celebration of local sport. On 18/19th August, sports clubs around the UK will be hosting special events to capture the once-in-a-lifetime enthusiasm for sport that this summer’s events will generate. On Wednesday 25th July Cabinet Minister Nick Hurd was very impressed with our story from being close to folding, when Pinebanks closed, to a rapidly growing Club that will be a major force in hockey in years to come.

New Social Media Policy

With the rapid increase in the use of social media, some clubs have seen their members banned for long periods as a direct consequence of inappropriate items posted on Facebook etc.  The NDHC Committee has responded by adopting a new Social Media Policy for the Club, which sets out the controls and sanctions associated with the use of Social Media by Club Members.

As per the Club’s RESPECT Code of Conduct, NDHC expects all Club Members to show respect to members of the Hockey Family, whether they are team-mates, club members, coaches, opponents, umpires or spectators.  Any inappropriate comments will be acted on and could lead to bans or expulsion.

Getting Back Into?

When Norwich Dragons player Bridget Le Good got involved in a seated exercise session for ‘mature ladies’ she did not expect to discover an enthusiastic group of over 80s who were keen to know all about hockey and GBs’ chances in the Olympics.

“The ladies asked me where I had acquired my fitness knowledge. I was pleased to explain much of it was derived from England Hockey’s Single System. I explained that some of the stretch exercises they had been doing were the very same that the GB team uses in their warm up, without the chairs!” said Bridget.

“My new squad, the Eager Cedars Over 80s, asked me to bring some hockey sticks to the next session.  They were amazed at the modern sticks, having played with the long English heads made of ash more than 70 years ago. We soon got into push passes – open face and reverse, stick skills, wide base receives, and block tackles. Our highlight was low and high penalty flicks.  My top scorer is 88, and was wielding a hockey stick for the first time.

So now my ladies are ready with their flags. They are 100 per cent behind GB; they’ve each picked a favourite player, and they’ll be watching out for 50 metre aerials, lateral moves across the pitch, sprints into the attacking circle from every angle and net-busting spectacular goals.  They’re sure GB will be the golden girls.”

Development League Training

Training for Development League will commence on Thursday 23rd August 6:30pm to 7:45pm for both boys and girls at the same time together. Again on 30th August, both girls and boys will train at the same time, together. From September onwards, the girls go to Fridays (6:15pm to 7:30pm) and the boys stay on Thursdays (6:45pm to 7:30pm). We are doing this as it is towards the end of the school holidays and numbers may be low (including numbers of coaches!).

Hockey House Activities

Given the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony is just 20 days away, it is time to publicise the events we plan to host at the Den over the Olympic period. As previously announced, we were delighted to have been selected by England Hockey to be one of only 11 Hockey Club Hockey Houses sponsored by GB Hockey. This provides us with many free of charge GB Hockey items to deck out the Goals Clubhouse.

So for your chance to watch the GB Hockey matches live on TV, get yourself along to the Goals Clubhouse for all except the games on Sunday 29th July (evening) and Saturday 11th August (afternoon and evening). Gather with other Club Members to soak up the Olympic atmosphere.

Did you get to see the Olympic Torch as the Relay travelled through Norfolk this week? If so, you might have seen GB Women’s Captain Kate Walsh running in Norwich and Kate was joined by James Colley on the Norwich leg. For those that don’t know James, he has a close association with Norwich Dragons Hockey Club, as well as UEA Hockey Club, being a Chemistry student at the UEA. James is a highly regarded hockey umpire, umpiring at a local and regional level. He also leads the coaching of young umpires in Norfolk.

For a very rare opportunity, how about popping along to the Den in the afternoon of either Saturday 4th August or Sunday 5th August to get a chance to see James and his Olympic Torch? Exact details will be emailed nearer to time.

That weekend also sees an opportunity for non-playing Mums (Saturday) & Dads (Sunday) of our Young Dragons to pick up a hockey stick with other ladies and men new or returning to the sport, in the ‘Give it a Go’ session at the Den!

With so many events taking place at the Den, we’ve colour coded the activities to link similar activities, dark green for all, light green development, orange for mixed, blue for men&older boys and pink the ladies&older girls. Hopefully this will help you find something that you can come along to watch, or get involved in.
As we get closer to some of the one-off events we will communicate further. If you have an idea for another event that you are prepared to organise, please let us know and we will see how we can help.
