John Butler – 70 Years Young!!

Yes, at 70 years of age (today), John (Butts) Butler is still playing hockey (for the Men’s 5s) and playing an active part in the Club, with his umpiring, coaching (at Club and Schools) and managing the Dev Boys.  It has been great to see him back, fully recovered from his hip operation in November 2012.

You can see a photo and a few words about John on the hockey pages of the EDP today.

Apart from a brief spell away from the Club to coach his grandchildren at Taverham, John has been a member of Norwich Union and Norwich Dragons Hockey Club for many years.  Below is a photo of John on the annual Tour to Cardiff with the Norwich Union Team in 1972.  Just in case you can’t recognise him, he is seated far left.  You might also spot another current Norwich Dragons player and great club person, Mike Banham, in the team (4th from right standing).

John also plays for the Ancient Britons Hockey Club, which has seen him travel the world to play hockey, including Hong Kong, Australia and Dereham (picture below).

The whole Club, and many beyond, wish John a very enjoyable 70th Birthday and hope for many more happy and healthy days ahead on the hockey pitch!!
