With the winter outdoor break during December and early January, the Dragons moved indoors, firstly the Under 16 Boys, as previously reported in the East Championships at the beginning of December. Then the Indoor Teams moved on to the UEA Sportspark on 29th December to take part in the friendly tournament arranged by Dain Lewis.
Dragons entered a mixed under 16 team to take on City (4-4) and Dereham (3-2 win), a Ladies team playing a City team (7-2 win) and a team with players from various clubs (8-0 win) and also a Men’s team that recorded a 3-1 Loss, 7-5 win and a 4-1 loss.
All the Dragons were given the opportunity to learn key indoor skills from one of the top indoor players and coaches in the country Kwan Browne. Former captain of the Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Hockey Team, Kwan, continues to dazzle the international hockey community with his pursuits. Kwan was awarded the much coveted England Hockey Performance Coach of the year title for the 2012-2013 season, edging out the Great Britain Senior Ladies Hockey Team coach Danny Kerry.
Kwan, is also Player-Coach of Canterbury Hockey Club Men’s first team, who finished in 3rd place in the Pensions Men’s Hockey League, Men’s Premier Division 2012-2013 season. Following these achievements Kwan has recently been appointed as the England Hockey U-16 Boys Assistant Coach and as a Coaching Consultant for England Hockey.
Finally, this weekend, the Men took part in the East League Division 1 Championships, finishing 5th. A tough first day with defeats against eventual winners Waltham Forest, 8-1 (Nick Charlish), and Bourne Deeping, 6-2 (Nick Charlish, Ali Smyth) saw Dragons miss out on the chance to play for promotion on the Sunday.
A much improved second day saw Dragons take the ‘plate competition’, with victory over Royston, 5-3 (Nick Charlish, Matt Knights, and Joe Broadbent with a hatrick), followed by an 8-2 win over Harpenden (Matt Knights x3, Rupert Snelling x2, Joe Broadbent, Nick Charlish, Ali Smyth).
Other members of the squad were Matt James, Richard Smith, Barney Price, Piers Gordon-Brown and Robert Wagstaff.
