East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 North East
Norwich Dragons 1s 2:3 Norwich City 1s

This was always going to be a significant match with both Norwich teams unbeaten in the league and very little between them at the top of the table.

It was City who had the better of the first 15 minutes of the game with the Dragons looking tentative and needing time to settle. The Dragons made a couple of tactical changes and as the half wore on the teams had equal amount of possession and the goal scoring opportunities fell to the Dragons which they failed to capitalise on. They were punished for this as the first clear cut chance for City was finished clinically giving them the lead. Dragons reacted immediately and within 5 minutes levelled with a fine finish by Laura SHREEVE. It remained 1-1 as the teams went into the break.

The second half proved very much the same with end to end play and little between the sides but it was City who took their chances proving to be lethal when they were allowed into the Dragons D and took the lead 2 – 1. As the Dragons pushed forward for a goal they left themselves exposed at the back and found themselves 3-1 down with little time left on the clock to come back. A short corner routine converted by Emily ROLLS made it 3-2. In the dying minutes of the game the Dragons looked the more likely to score but had left it too late and it was City that took all 3 points and the position at the top of the table.

Player of the match Rowie YORK-SMITH.

Norwich Dragons 2s 2:0 Broadland 1s

With the pitch comfortably passing an inspection by the umpires, the game started in bright sunshine at the TCH Dragons’ Den.Dragons 2’s started very brightly, with Niamh Lowe-Davies making a strong run down the right hand side, cutting in along the baseline to cross the ball to Klara Moolman, who had got herself into an excellent position on the far post, but just couldn’t quite convert. This bright start encouraged the Dragons, who were really sharp on the day, with some great play down the right from Ally Windsor-Waite well supported by Lucy Hopgood and Debs Smith in the middle.A couple of stoppages for injuries to Broadland players saw the first half delayed, however Dragons kept their concentration and finally made their pressure count. Lucy Hopgood found some great space on the right of the D and played a perfect ball across to Sarah Radley, who coolly dispatched past the strong Broadland goalkeeper.Despite continuing to have good possession in the Broadland half, the Dragons defence needed to be aware of the quick breaks by Broadland who attacked quickly and in numbers. With Sarah Wagstaff and Angela Murgatroyd making some timely interceptions and joint player of the match goalkeeper Laura Tuck, saving and clearing excellently when required, the score remained 1 – 0 at half time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Dragons creating a number of chances and forcing a series of short corners, which were well defended by a resolute Broadland defence. Ruth Willmott and Debs Smith (the other joint Player of the Match) started to control the middle of the pitch and the ever hard working Klara Moolman began to see more of the ball and helped create further opportunities.

The match was finally settled, when unfortunately a Broadland player slipped on the turn, the Dragons forward line pounced, and the 3 points were sealed with a goal by Hannah Hardy.

This was an extremely encouraging performance by a 2nd team who have always shown they have potential, but in this match showed they had the appetite and determination to battle. Well played to everyone – let’s keep pushing forward.

Norwich Dragons 5s A:A Herlings

Dragons 5s took an earlier lead thanks to a short corner strike by Lizzy McDonnell, however the strength of the Herlings players and their approach to the game began to wear down the young Dragons team and at half time Herlings were 3-1 up.  After approximately 5 minutes of the second half the Herlings Captain was beaten by an inspired Lisa Harwood, however as the attack developed, the umpires stopped the game because the Herlings Captain had collapsed onto all fours with a recurring back spasm that required an ambulance visit to administer pain relief to allow the player to be moved.  The match was abandoned after a delay in play of over 30 minutes.
